What came to be known as psychotherapy emerged in the face of considerable opposition, much—indeed most—of which was generated by the medical profession itself. Caplan examines the contentious interplay within the American medical community, as well as between American physicians and their lay rivals, who included faith-healers, mind-curists, Christian Scientists, and Protestant ministers. These early practitioners of alternative medicine ultimately laid the groundwork for a distinctive and much heralded American type of psychotherapy. Its grudging acceptance by both medical elites and rank and file physicians signified their understanding that reliance on physical therapies to treat nervous and mental symptoms compromised their capacity to treat—and compete—effectively in a rapidly expanding mental-medical marketplace. Mind Games shows how psychotherapy came to occupy its central position in mainstream American culture.

A Great Read, A Great Book

Caplan's Mind Games offers an original and engaging analysis of the origins of psychotherapy in the United States. Rather than tracing the birth of psychotherapy to Freudian ideas about the unconscious, Caplan argues that roots of American psychotherapy are planted firmly in the soil of American medicine and culture. The evidence he offers to support these claims is extensive and extraordinarily well-documented. This book is a true gem that deserves the widest possible readership.

Great book

I just got this book. I am an older practicer of the sport. The translation is excellent. It's very organized, I am getting a lot help with the Japanese terms. This is the only source, where I can find them. The pictures are a big help. We use this book at our Dojo as a reference. I recommend this book highly to all aikidoka.

Excellent book for Aikido

I started doing Aikido in 2008. I was looking for a good manual on this rarely practiced sport. When I learned last year, that a new book was coming out, I was very curious.
This book is well written. The introduction is good. The table of contents is set up well and the reader can find needed items quickly. The illustrations show all of the techniques in order.
My only knock on the book would be the price.
I would strongly recommend this book to any practitioner of Aikido.

Muddles matters by mixing engineering technique with Matlab

A book that succeeds at teaching Matlab generally limits itself to just that. This book tries to hard to be an engineer's guide to Matlab and adds some unnecessary filler starting with chapter one "An Introduction to Engineering Problem Solving". This is not really what someone who wants to learn Matlab wants to see, and it could have been omitted with nobody really missing it.

The book has a rather confusing way of introducing the Matlab user interface. There are generally several ways of using Matlab, and this book tries to force one particular way of using the program down the student's throat, whether it may seem natural or not. The book does a good job of introducing the syntax of individual parts of Matlab. However, it is so busy showing the student how to solve real problems with Matlab it forgets to show a real Matlab program - as in "this is calcdrag.m, which calculates the drag generated by an aircraft". It does show this sort of thing eventually, but in a roundabout and convoluted way. The book is pretty good at coming up with interesting problems to solve using Matlab, but I think it does a rather mediocre job of teaching the language itself.

I've found the best guide for beginners to be "Mastering MATLAB 7". It is very good for beginners who need to look up how to do general tasks such as write a function using variable arguments, perform plotting, or figure out how to shoe-horn a problem into Matlab that doesn't really seem to fit the Matlab paradigm of everything being a matrix. Another good book is "Getting Started with MATLAB 7: A Quick Introduction for Scientists and Engineers". That book not only explains Matlab well, it shows how to apply all aspects of the language to engineering problems in a clear and concise manner.

If you get stuck with this book as a textbook in a class and you find it somewhat incoherent, the two alternative texts I mention are very affordable supplements/alternatives.

Totally written in Spanish, which can be nice, but sometimes you just need a bit of explanation in English to fully comprehend. Seems like it was not written for adults. Lessons were a bit juvenile.

Spanish for the English speaker

I bought this book as a supplement to the basic Spanish lessons I was taking. This is a workbook which follows a pattern of lessons (text + pictures) followed immediately by a quiz. Also has an audio CD that you have to listen to (native Spaniards speaking) and answer questions. Quite useful. Grammar and sentence construct lessons are aligned to help the English language expert.

I ordered this into India which is not such a good idea as the shipment is in a flimsy pack. Besides taking 40 days, the book was wet when it arrived. A plastic wrap would have done nicely. Be warned.
The contents are still worth every cent. I have since ordered Book-2 :-)

We are big fans of Poly Science and have several of their sous vide machines in our kitchen, so it's hard to slam them too much. However, this book should be made available for free as it's nothing more than a promotional piece for the company and their products. Recipes are nothing special and you could find them on the internet with little effort. If you are interested in Sous Vide cooking, keep looking as there are better books out there by authors like Keller, Logsdon and Myhrvold. Sadly, Preston is not one of them. Sorry Philip.

If not Polyscience, I hope that possible polyscience's customers can hear me seriously, since polysciente did not hear me. I bought the sous vide creative professional and just before complete one year the water circulator stop to work. I google the problem and for my surprise I realized that this problem is very frequent in this product. I believe that U$ 400 product is quite expensive and also, someone should told me that is was a disposable product or one year product. For my surprise, the warranty worlwide promissed me at the purchase moment was not true. This is the world. What I can do is spread this information and help other customers not be betraid. Regards

About the Author
William J. Neville, head coach of the national men's volleyball team, is one of the foremost authorities on volleyball in the United States. He has coached three Olympic volleyball teams, first as an assistant for the 1968 U.S. men's team, then as head coach of the 1976 Canadian men's team, and finally as an assistant for the gold-medal winning 1984 U.S. men's team. Neville was technical director for the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA)--know called USA Volleyball--from 1986 to 1988. While with the USVBA, he was responsible for initiating their Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP), which prepared him to put together this guide for more effective coaching.

About USA Volleyball

USA Volleyball (USAV)--formerly the US Volleyball Association--is the nation's governing body for the sport from the youth club level to the Olympics. The objective of USAV is to promote volleyball and make playing volleyball accessible to all Americans. To that end, USAV established its Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP). CAP accreditation provides volleyball coaches at all levels with standards for effective teaching, organization, drilling, practicing, and planning.

Good basic book, with good perspective

This book is used as the textbook for the first level of the Coaching Accreditation Program for USA Volleyball. It has a good broad perspective on the game, how to motivate and how to teach the skills. It also goes the through season and practice planning and breaks down the process in a very basic manner, which I found very useful.
A great beginning coach's book.
