The 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment was one of the elite parachute regiments of World War II. Attached to the famed 82nd Airborne Division, it parachuted into Normandy during the predawn hours of June 6, 1944, spearheading the invasion of Hitler’s fortress Europe. There, it fought with distinction for thirty-four days before being relieved. Less than sixty days later, the regiment made a daring daylight jump fifty-three miles behind German lines to spearhead the invasion of Holland. It seized vital high ground and held it against repeated German counterattacks and was the first Allied parachute regiment to fight on German soil. Shortly after being relieved in Holland, the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment was rushed to Belgium to stem the German onslaught in the Ardennes. The 508th screened the withdrawal of more than 20,000 U.S. soldiers from the St.-Vith pocket and then stopped an assault by the 9th SS Panzer Division at Erria. The regiment then participated in the drive to the German border to eliminate the Belgian bulge. It subsequently fought in the Hrtgen Forest, where it captured Hill 400 and other critical high ground south of the Kall River in its last combat action. The 508th was detached from the 82nd Airborne Division in the closing days of the war and was placed in strategic reserve. At the conclusion of the war in Europe, the regiment was selected to guard General Dwight Eisenhower’s headquarters in Germany. In the third of his highly acclaimed regimental histories, historian Phil Nordyke tells the story of this remarkable unit through the experiences and words of the veterans. He has gathered hundreds of first person accounts from interviews, questionnaires, diaries, letters, memoirs, awards files, and official accounts. Mr. Nordyke skillfully weaves them to create a powerful narrative that brings the reader into the action. It is a story of close combat, tremendous courage, devotion to duty, and sacrifice.

Completing the trilogy
By Timothy F. Blixt
I am not a WWII expert nor a wartime scholar. I do, however, read voraciously on the subject. This is the final edition of Nordyke's regimental trilogy in which he tells the stories of the 504th, 505th, and 508th Parachute Infantry Regiments of the 82nd Airborne Division. I have read all of Phil Nordyke's 82nd Airborne books and have enjoyed all of them. To my knowledge Phil is very probably the leading expert on the 82nd and I have found all of his books to be invaluable----his latest, "Put Us Down In Hell", may well be his best yet. As an avid reader about the war, I find myself most drawn to first person accounts of the battles. Of course the obvious shortcoming of a book written by one veteran is that we're only exposed to the experiences of that one participant. Books written by non combatants have the advantage of being able to cover the entirety of the subject---but there is that nagging question of authenticity when reading a book that is essentially something filtered through the eye of the author. To my way of thinking, Nordyke's books combine the best of both worlds. Not only his his writing first rate, but his research is exhaustive, and most importantly, he tells his story almost exclusively through the eyes and words of those who lived these actions. I haven't counted, but I am sure there are dozens of accounts from 82nd veterans used here to tell the story of the 508th PIR. Checking in at nearly 500 pages of text, it seems highly likely that very little was missed here in the telling of their actions on D-Day, during Market Garden, and in the Bulge. I am grateful that Phil chose to not spend his precious time detailing the pre war training of the 508, a subject that has been covered in many other books. The action in this one is nearly non stop and the stories these troopers tell is spell binding. For this reader, this is WWII literature at its best.

Great read
By Brian
Phil Nordyke has done a fabulous job of bringing the stories of the men of the 508th to life in their own words and then weaving them into the historical facts of the regiment and the division.
In only the way he can, he lets the men who did the fighting speak for themselves, with the raw emotions that only men in battle can describe.
It is an amazing testimony to the men of the 508th. Wonderful read.

Put Us Down In Hell
By Andrew Reed
Once again, Mr. Nordyke has hit the ball out of the park with this history of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. For the average reader, this is an eye opening, educational and very exciting read. His extensive use of first person, veteran accounts put the reader right there in the fox hole for some of the most dramatic combat events of WWII.
As a student of military history, I found "Put Us Down In Hell" an invaluable resourse. On one hand, the author provides a good general profile of the early development and application of American airborne forces. On the other hand, Mr. Nordyke provides us with a very detailed, (often daily; sometimes hour by hour), account of the regiment's involvement in combat. And again, his use of veteran narratives adds a very personal and priceless element to the history. This was a very enjoyable read.
