Steven M. Cahn is professor of philosophy at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He has written or edited some fifty books, including Fate, Logic, and Time; God, Reason, and Religion; Saints and Scamps: Ethics in Academia; and From Student to Scholar: A Candid Guide to Becoming a Professor.

Christine Vitrano is associate professor of philosophy at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. She is the author of The Nature and Value of Happiness and coeditor, with Steven M. Cahn, of Happiness: Classic and Contemporary Readings in Philosophy.

Good start but fizzled at the end

This book started out with a bang, went into a couple of tailspins and then fizzled out like a wet firecracker. The philosophical duo of Cahn and Vitrano, both professors in New York City's CUNY system, started with a clear and actually very funny exposition of what it means to live a a good life. In very clear steps, they explained how one could be moral and unhappy, moral and happy, immoral and happy and immoral and unhappy. They also pretty much laid to rest the notion that true happiness is only available to those who engage in loftier activities, like attending the opera or reading classical literature. No, a person can be happy watching professional wrestling or collecting string, for that matter. At times, I was actually laughing out loud at some of their comments, like when they equated repetitive actions to the philosophical enterprise of writing papers to elicit responses, a cycle that can go on forever. Then, the wheels fell off the bus. Sorry to say this, but their treatment of God as a player in morality was shallow and amateurish. A little reading of 2,000 years of theology might help. Specifically, God is not subject to moral standards; he is those moral standards. Finally, the book ended rather weakly, with an ultimate appeal to living the good life via a combination of living according to the wisdom of the Book of Ecclesiastes and to the teachings of Epicurus, summarized in the statement "Be good and enjoy." I don't want to poo poo this book too much. Along with the disappointing bits, there is a lot of good philosophy and some very interesting material. In particular, the book's first few chapters are an excellent example of philosophical argumentation, modelling how both sides of an issue can be presented and dissected in the search for truth.

This book is essitial if you design landing gear

I have been an aerospace for over 25 years and within the last couple of years have been working on landing gear specifically. This book is on every shelf of anyone who has anything to do with landing gear. That is why I purchased it. The small price you pay for this reference bible will be paid for over and over again as you refer to its insights and knowledge contain within its pages. It outlines everything from bushings to complete landing gear system and everything in-between. With the knowledge in this book it will give you an excellent base to start from and an excellent reference for years to come. If I could give it 10 stars I would. You will not be disappointed with your purchase

Write with Confidence!

This book is a great reference for those just learning English or native English speakers who occasionally need to check on the exact use of an ampersand, comma or semicolon. The reference is divided in to the following sections: punctuation, capitals/italics/question marks, plurals/possessives/compounds, abbreviations, numbers, grammar/composition, and problems in word usage. I commonly find myself using this reference when typing professional letters, writing stories, or whenever I get confused on the exact use of a particular element of punctuation or style. It's a small book but contains tons of content and enough examples to compliment each section.

A bargain for such a useful tool

For the price you'll pay for this book you can hardly afford not to have it by your side when writing, editing or proofreading. I use it for all three of the aforementioned tasks. While your computer may be constantly connected to the internet, sometimes it's just easier to pick up an actual reference book and find the answer you need.

In the case of this little reference book (just the size of a paperback novel) you'll discover it's easy to lookup your question in the index and then quickly find the information you need. They layout and font face that was used makes this guide read almost like a dictionary. A Truly Unique and Sparkling Perspective on Women and Celebrity

There are tens of thousands of essays on women and celebrity in the world, and yet Alana Massey manages to cut a path perpendicular to this well worn road. Bypassing the traditional sociological analysis of the influence these women and girls have on our culture, Massey examines how our culture influences them. In “There Can Only Be One,” she litigates the media-created feud between Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim as the product of cultural misogynoir that will only “allow” one tough and sexy Black woman to rule hip hop at a time. Essays on Anna Nicole Smith and the “crazy ex-girlfriend” label applied to women as seemingly dissimilar as Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes and Princess Di critique our treatment of women who break the traditional boundaries of class and gender rules, often to be met with derision even when they suffer tragedy.

But All the Lives I Want is not simply cultural criticism; Massey digs several miles below the surface, past intellect and emotion into the spiritual meaning of our one-sided relationships with these famous figures. Her essays don't attempt to humanize these women (though that does happen as a byproduct of her singular empathy) but rather to make a compelling case that each of them fulfills the timeless necessity as the individual incarnations of the many faces of femininity. My favorite, “The Queen of Hearts: An Alternative Account of the Life and Crimes of Courtney Love”, presents the rocker and actor (more famous for being a widow than an artist in her own right) not as a parasitic nagging wife (and accused murderer by her husband’s fans), but as an aspirational icon of chthonic power, a destroyer figure, and necessary model of “female brutality.” Her elevation of the Lisbon sisters in The Virgin Suicides alongside the many clusters of sisters scattered across Greek mythology, interwoven with the genuinely mystical love she shares with her own sister (born on the same day under the sign of Gemini), is almost unbearably beautiful. The essay is not just a coruscating love song to sisterhood, but punctuated throughout with a needle sharp critique of the failure of imagination of the male gaze that fetishizes and sexualizes sisterly love while missing the deep spirituality of the connection.

Massey’s time at Yale Divinity School may seem incongruous with writing about something so “trivial” as celebrity, but she effortlessly clarifies the metaphysical quality of feminine fame; by comparison, all others writing on the topic see only as if through a glass, darkly.

All The Lives I Want is a refreshing collection of pop culture criticism that is in turns both heartbreaking and hilarious. While most critics attempt to distance themselves from their own personal connection to the famous subjects at hand, Massey recognizes not just the futility in creating that kind of separation but also the strength of stating her own stake in these celebrity stories which are still, at their core, about human beings who have been wronged or misrepresented as ordinary people have as well. The standout essays are about Sylvia Plath, Lil Kim, and Britney Spears, though all of them stand on their own merits and fans of the women covered will likely be pleased with Massey's careful, compassionate conclusions.

Courtney Love, Sylvia Plath among many others

All the Lives I Want is a collection of essays covering women celebrities, the public perception of them and a lens into how that public perception is skewed due to their gender. Something that I found very refreshing is the diversity of the women chosen for the essays, Winona Ryder, Lil Kim, Courtney Love, Sylvia Plath among many others. Despite their very different backgrounds and times in which they were famous the author is able to show parallels in how the public was conditioned to see them. And despite their roles as celebrities, the author also shows similarities that everyday women can relate to in how they are expected to behave. It is an intelligent book, while still being an easy read and I think a very good book for women of all ages to read, as well as anyone else interested in the different expectations on women's behavior and the consequences society places on them when they do not meet those expectations.

Train train away!!!!

I love the training journal. It is the first one that even allows me to keep track of all the running "stuff" but my food portions. It is 1 year long so you can start any time and go for 52 weeks. It has a great overview with place for goals and races you may want to try. Since I am starting over with run/walk at 65 it is revenant for any age. I only have good kudos' for it. Enjoy if you buy one. It does go with their book which I am also using.

Great programs tailored for the "mortal" runner

Last year, I trained and ran a half marathon. Injured myself in the process by going too far too soon - plantar fasciitis. This time I am (hopefully) wiser and going slower with my training this time around. Thank goodness for the practical advice and programs offered in this book. I am following the full marathon program offered for running/walking. So far, so good. This book is a read and follow for any planning on running, walking or running/walking a long distance race!

Concise, comprehensive guide to working with synthetic lines

Modern lines are stronger, more flexible, and slipperier than traditional natural fiber lines. Most modern lines are braided rather than twisted, resulting in different splicing and knotting techniques. There are a bewildering number of synthetic line brands and types. Splicing Modern Lines defines products such as Spectra, Vectran, and Dyneema, and describes advantages, disadvantages and applications for each. This book has step-by-step instructions for various types of splices such as eye or lock splices. What I found most helpful were the appendices which contain tables and formulas for applications such as how to determine the mooring line size by the length of the vessel ( vessel length in meters plus 2 = line diamater in millimeters), and breaking strength tables. Particular attention is paid to each line type's susceptibility to UV degradation. This book should be in every sailors', riggers', mountain climbers', rescue responders', and contractor's toolbox.

For the mathematically sophisticated

The review by Library Picks makes some good points, but I think it is aimed at the wrong audience. This book is for graduate students of physics who have already studied quantum mechanics. In the U.S. physics graduate students take a year of quantum mechanics (QM), at the level of Merzbacher, generally in their first year. This frequently follows an undergraduate course in QM at the level, say, of Griffiths' fine text. Many would like to then study quantum field theory (QFT), which is fundamental to many research areas including condensed matter, quantum optics, and especially elementary particle theory. But many students find that the QFT course is too big a jump from the first year graduate course in ordinary (i.e. nonrelativistic) QM. The QFT course combines not only QM but advanced level classical field theory, special relativity, and classical mechanics of continua.. There are many fine textbooks in QFT, the current standard being the book by Peskin and Schroeder. But students often find P&S too difficult. Hence in many universities there are post-QM pre-QFT courses and so there are a few corresponding textbooks -- as pioneered by Bjorken and Drell in 1964 -- which attempt to bridge the gap. Here is where Ohlsson's book comes in.

The general syllabus of such a course and text is to start with relativistic generalizations of Schr�dinger's equation and end with the beginnings of quantized fields, including a bit of renormalization. In ordinary QM position and momentum are operators which operate on the wave function. But in QFT the wave function becomes the operator, and position and momentum become mere labels. This is called "second quantization." Moreover, because relativity says that energy can be converted into matter, in relativistic QFT particles can be created and destroyed, unlike ordinary QM in which the number of particles is fixed. Students find these facts perplexing.

Ohlsson's commendable book follows this broad outline. However, I issue a strong caveat to prospective buyers or adopters. First of all, he is very terse, covering the subject in less than half the number of pages as, say, the competitive book by F. Gross. Secondly, Ohlsson assumes a mathematical sophistication beyond what I find in the majority of American physics grad students. He uses some concepts such as "strong limits" and "absolutely continuous spectrum" in his discussion of scattering theory. His opening chapter provides a very thorough treatment of the Lorentz and Poincar� groups and their representations. There is a helpful eight-page appendix on group theory, including Lie groups and Lie algebras, but I doubt that a student who has not previously been exposed to these ideas can master the material from this appendix.

One thing for which I especially want to commend Ohlsson, is the inclusion at the end of every chapter of a bibliography referring to other texts covering similar material, including specific page or chapter references. He also footnotes Nobel prize winners the first time their names are mentioned and quotes excerpts from the Nobel prize citation.

More of a Graduate Reference than Undergrad Text, but Excellent

Before Dirac there really was no "relativistic" quantum mechanics and fields, as even Pauli's waveforms extending Schrodinger from 1 to 2 wasn't well understood until Dirac's 4 x 4 explained Pauli. That said, you'd think this text would be mostly about Dirac and developments since his 1928 masterpiece.

This is true to an extent, but his "holes" have now become positrons and accelerator, decay and detection experiments have vastly expanded gauge theories into a virtual taxonomy of new particles and properties in the intersection between special relativity and quantum mechanics and fields (general relativity still has issues in that intersection even today, and not just in gravity). The text does an excellent job of covering all the major trends with good updates, but the math is bang...bang...bang, and assumes you "get" not only the transformations and symmetries, but already know the symbology. So, not to argue with the publisher, but I'd give this 5 stars for grad students and as a professional derivation reference, but definitely not recommend it as an undergrad text without a really good teacher, supplemental texts, or as an advanced placement course for Seniors that are already into grad material.

The author is spotty in explaining whether a plain L is a Lagrangian, and in what form it's used, for example. If you're already familiar with both relativity and QED, for example, extensions to field theory and combined mechanics will make this text valuable because you'll recognize the equations and symbols by the context. Subtle differences between uses as phases vs. operators vs. tensors, etc. are NOT explained in detail in many sections-- the author is very bright and often assumes you've already used a lot of the notation in earlier Physics classes.

The same holds true of the math. You should be familiar with differential equations and linear algebra as well as transforms, Lorenz and of course Laplacians. If you've studied the basics of Dirac you'll be much better off, as the differential equations, linear algebra and even gauge analysis coming from his seminal equations and subsequent particle results are key here. After all, as humble as his initial goals were, he DID unify the two fields that are the subject of this text, and with Yang-Mills, gave us a 3/4 unification of standard fields (electromagnetics, strong and weak, gravity to come someday soon!).

The really nice thing is that there are not a lot of errors in this text. There are some typos, but most of the formulas, problems, solutions and exercises are well proofed. For a 300 page book costing up to $60 US you might expect that rigor, but not so... many texts I've reviewed in Physics lately are pathetically proofed and edited. How can a self study student expect to overcome formula errors when the RIGHT answers are hard enough on their own? Fortunately the author and publisher were obviously more ethical than rushed in the case of this fine volume. Highly recommended for advanced grad students and as a reference for researchers and professors wanting to brush up on derivations and formula (eg symmetry) variations. We got this from an Amazon third party for $25-- at that price it is a real gem.
