The Golden Bough: A Study of Magic and Religion, by Sir James George Frazer Sir

Sir James George Frazer originally set out to discover the origins of one ancient custom in Classical Rome - the plucking of the Golden Bough from a tree in the sacred grove of Diana, and the murderous succession of the priesthood there - and was led by his investigations into a twenty-five year study of primitive customs, superstitions, magic and myth throughout the world. The monumental thirteen-volume work which resulted has been a rich source of anthropological material and a literary masterpiece for more than half a century. - The Golden Bough is an essential reference work for all involved in the intellectual disciplines of anthropology and the history of religion but also on literature and the arts. - The third edition, reprinted here was Frazer's final authoritative statement in which he offered readers a dramatically new way of understanding the religious beliefs and behaviour of the ancient world and their connection to those of the 'primitive' world that then made up much of the British Empire. - Frazer's three-stage evolutionary ladder of magic-religion-science gave his large readership a clear way of understanding, in David Hume's phrase, 'the natural history of religion.' - The third edition is presented with two major works of scholarship enabling readers to understand the origins, development and importance of Frazer's landmark work - The first extra volume is an out of print biography of J.G. Frazer by Professor Robert Ackerman first published by Cambridge University Press, Professor Ackerman also provides us with an excellent introduction in this volume. - The second volume contains Dr Robert Fraser's The Making of the Golden Bough . - These volumes are available as a two-volume set as well as being part of the fifteen volume set.

Review

'In the condensed volume which lies before us we can grasp the masterly plan of the whole work; the mind is fascinated by the author's skill as a constructive thinker and a framer of concepts, and also as a compiler of picturesque detail.' - Spectator

'...equally remarkable for its vast assembly of facts and its unusual charm of presentation. Few men of such learning have written more attractively.' - George Sampson, Concise Cambridge History of English Literature

'A classic; theoretically outmoded, but still informative, stimulating and highly readable.' - Maurice Freedman and I. Schapera, Reader's Guide

About the Author
SIR JAMES GEORGE FRAZER (1854-1941) was one of the early pioneers in the sociological study of religion. He began his career as a classicist but it is for his work in social anthropology that he is best remembered. His most famous work, The Golden Bough first appeared in 1890 in a two-volume edition but was twice revised and expanded, the third edition appearing in twelve volumes in 1911-15 and a thirteenth volume, Aftermath, appearing some twenty years later. Frazer's other works include Psyche's Task, Totemism and Exogamy, The Belief in Immortality and The Worship of the Dead and Folklore in the Old Testament.

It can be used either way but it is good either way though slow reading cover to cover

This is an old book & a classic. I put it in my library more as a reference than as a book to read through. It can be used either way but it is good either way though slow reading cover to cover. I recommend anyone interested in mythology & religion to have this book available as a reference. One important principle here is the similarity of religions & their origine. I am an ordained Christian minister & will always be yet we must ? the beginning of monotheism & Christianity as we ? everything. For those who are littoral believers, this book can be disturbing but it is always good to see another point of view. Read it. RAG

I recommend this book highly
By Coyote
Sir James Frazer's work is a fascinating look into the scientific approach of the Victorian era. While it has become fashionable to dismiss his work in modern times, his work (especially his lectures, included in the back of the book) speaks volumes for his dedication to knowledge. His meticulous documentation of his sources seems to have helped push forward the scientific community's understanding of the inadequacies of his time period's widespread use of secondary and tertiary sources as no other work could. Between this and his deliberate openness to criticism, Frazer's contribution to the development of modern research techniques is without peer. I recommend this book highly.

What else can I say except this is a classic ...
By Seplaire
What else can I say except this is a classic - a treasure-trove of beliefs, rituals and traditions of "Magic" and "Religion" (and wherever the twain, and medicine, do meet). This is an all-encompassing reference book invaluable to those who were mesmerized by Greek mythology, entranced by the sylvan and nature beliefs and rituals of both ancient times and aboriginal practices. Certainly not written with any thought of "political correctness" (Frazer lumps most aboriginal humans - both past and Frazer's present day - as "barbarians" or "savages"), the reader must consider when this was written; yet, one will find terminology still used today (remember the movie "Practical Magic").
