Research driven actionable leadership book for new and advanced leaders

Exceptional book on leadership! The most successful leaders are able to balance between driving and supporting employees. Leaders that drive too hard are looked at as authoritarian and cruel (even if they aren't), while leaders who are too supportive can be perceived as weak and lacking results (even if they achieve them). In their model, the driven leader would be high on the respect scale and the supportive leader on responsibility. They are the two sides of the pendulum that need to be balanced. Each side can be broken into smaller parts like empathy, accountability, and confidence. Turkentt breaks down each section into relatable stories and actionable advice, while also digging into the foundational research to support the methods. This is now a staple book I use when training leaders on our team. Even the most advanced leaders can take away actionable improvements from this book.

From Citizen Rebellion in the Holocaust to Corporate HR: Decency Rules the Day

Here's a book that approaches integrity in business not from the marketing side, but from management and human resources. And one that will almost surely build your personal communication skills, and thus the effectiveness of yourself, your reports, your supervisor, and your company.

I recommend reading Andra Media's "Conflict Unraveled" first, as it provides a nice framework to better understand and appreciate the information in this newer work.

It takes a while to get into the somewhat stiff writing style, but it's worth the effort. Focused as it is on character principles as management tools, it's an excellent counterpart to my book, Principled Profit: Marketing that Puts People First, and a strong reminder that the success and empowerment of our own employees not only our responsibility as ethical leaders, but also crucial to our own success. And yet, DPDC is also willing to step well outside the business world for the perfect example: such as the quiet heroism of Miep Gies, the Dutch secretary who sheltered Anne Frank and her family, and who saved Anne's diary after the Nazis raided the hidden dwelling.

Some of the specific goodies I found:

* Change agents within an organization are most successful when they start by publicly acknowledging what people are doing right--to catch and report their success just as so many of us are quick to catch and announce what's wrong.

* People rise to our expectations; if we express the attitude that they are fully capable of the task they've taken on, they will succeed.

* Integrity is a balance of the twin principles of respect and responsibility, which the Turknetts see as the fundamental elements, the Yin and Yang, of human interaction. Under the category of respect, the authors group empathy, emotional mastery, lack of blame, and humility (each with its own chapter); the responsibility attributes include accountability, courage, self-confidence and integrity or wholeness.

* Managers can learn a great deal by implementing "skip-level reports," where an employee communicates directly with the supervisor's supervisor.

* It's vital to understand the difference between inquiry--probing to learn what others think, what approaches they might use--and advocacy for your own position.

* Blame is "a poisonous response" and isn't ever productive.

* Keep your promises!

* Perhaps most important, it's never too late to implement changes in the relationships at a company.

On that last point, the book is filled with stories of executives and managers who were perceived as arrogant, not listening, needing to be protected from hurtful (but necessary) information, and driving forward their own agenda without meaningful input from others. Yet, in every case cited, once the manager became aware of the problem and took responsibility for it, change occurred very rapidly--usually within even a week or two. Once direct reports started feeling that they were being heard and their advice was sought and implemented, major barriers crumbled quickly.

In the last section, the authors note that sometimes doing the right thing is not obvious. We all know not to steal, but when forced between betraying a confidential information or allowing a friend to make a disastrous decision, the choice is not easy. Yet, the authors cite a study of CEOs by the Southern Institute for Business and Professional Ethics; 99 percent felt that high ethical standards strengthen a company's competitive position. To conclude, the Turknetts offer six tools to build personal integrity, and five to strengthen the integrity of a company.

A leadership manual that emphasizes integrity

Robert L. Turknett and Carolyn N. Turknett wrote this book before the corporate scandals of Enron, Tyco and WorldCom, so their emphasis on integrity as a crucial component of leadership is prescient. They believe in emotional and life balance rather than ambition, and cooperation rather than competition. Every chapter is full of examples of people who have taken leadership roles based on these values, showing that it is, in fact, possible. We recommend this book to leaders and aspiring leaders - whether of organizations, companies, departments, or even social or family groups - who wish to find out how they, as individuals, can lead with integrity. Leaders who truly believe in what they are doing and the people they are leading will embrace the challenge of further developing themselves using this leadership character model.

Classic Mystery

The first part of the book (over 50%) is a really good classic mystery. I would have given it a five star rating. The last part of the book were very short story mysteries which were more thought-provoking than classic mystery. Overall I enjoyed the book, especially because it was free.

First part great, second part not as good

As another reviewer has stated, The Old Stone House takes up more than half the book while the other stories are quite short. That story rates 5 stars, in my opinion, and the other stories collectively about a 3. They read so quickly, though, both separately and as a whole, that the impression of the book after it's over is largely of that first story. These are not detective stories - their appeal comes from their atmosphere. Not Anna Katharine Green as we generally think of her, but a good read nonetheless. Very much recommended.

Green is still an incredible Author

Popular in a prior century Anna Katharine Green is still one of the best mystery writers out there. She tells a great story, her plots are well thought out, characters well developed, and descriptions put you in the story. This collection of short stories shows off her skill very well. I highly recommend this collection.

I've worked with LUMA in the past year and find their materials to be outstanding and their "Looking, Understanding, Making" approach to be very accessible to average people who don't necessarily think of themselves as "innovators". They provide simple methods that help people and groups work together to lead them from idea generation through selection finally to envisioning implementation. Through careful selection and presentation of well-known tools and good external resources for those who wish to learn more, they are able to provide something useful for the novice to the expert. In short, these guys ROCK!

Useful overview of some creative design techniques

Innovating for People gives a helpful short guide to a range of techniques useful in design. Each design technique is shown as a easy-to-read double-page spread, giving a brief explanation, bullet points on how the technique works, helpful hints, benefits and an example and photo of the technique in action. The techniques are classified into different categories (looking, understanding and making) and a diagram shows which techniques work well together. Many of the techniques involve generating ideas and sorting and prioritizing them; there are fewer techniques on how to communicate processes. There is just about enough detail to use the technique - more explanation and expanded examples would help. I can see how to adapt some of the techniques to my design work. I feel this book is most useful as material to accompany one of the Luma Institute's courses on Human-Centred Design, but it does work as a stand-alone resource.

I cannot stress enough how clear and relevant this book is! It's Awesome!!

It would be very easy for me to gush about this book. I absolutely loved it! I made all sorts of time in my schedule to read it over a few days. This bookwas intensely gripping. Cardinal Ratzinger (Benedict XVI)has a real talent not only for pointing out what's wrong with the liturgy as is and where it needs to change, but for doing so firmly yet gently. He begins with explaining why we do liturgy at all, how it connects us to the life, Passion and Resurrection of Christ, and then he goes on to discuss the various aspects of the liturgy. I found the chapter on music particularly amusing at one point because he was discussing how liturgical music is banal, how it was influenced by popular culture, by all sorts of errors, and yet the situation he was describing was not that of today, but that which caused the Council of Trent, yet it rings crystal clear for today. Allright, no more spoilers!! Pick up this book, particularly if you want to get a clear understanding of what the liturgy is, and what it shouldn't be made out to be! I can't stress enough how much I absolutely enjoyed this book! It was fantastic, no point in giving it a rating out of five points, because it would be far off the scale. The writing was engaging and clear, the topic was timely, and very masterfully presented!

I wish I could get my money back on this one. I bought a hundred books and this one just stinks as the puzzles are so difficult that only true genius's can figure them out.
The answers are so convoluted that even with them telling you the answer it's hard to figure how they got that in that everything is explained with one sentence usually.
I can't understand why it's so hard to find a good book that explains the logic behind the solutions that are based on sound reasoning.

This book has lots and lots of practice "diagrammatic reasoning" questions. This book assumes you already know how to complete the diagrams. The answers to all of the problems are in the back, but this book does not really teach you how to solve the diagrams.

About the Author
SIR JAMES GEORGE FRAZER (1854-1941) was one of the early pioneers in the sociological study of religion. He began his career as a classicist but it is for his work in social anthropology that he is best remembered. His most famous work, The Golden Bough first appeared in 1890 in a two-volume edition but was twice revised and expanded, the third edition appearing in twelve volumes in 1911-15 and a thirteenth volume, Aftermath, appearing some twenty years later. Frazer's other works include Psyche's Task, Totemism and Exogamy, The Belief in Immortality and The Worship of the Dead and Folklore in the Old Testament.

It can be used either way but it is good either way though slow reading cover to cover

This is an old book & a classic. I put it in my library more as a reference than as a book to read through. It can be used either way but it is good either way though slow reading cover to cover. I recommend anyone interested in mythology & religion to have this book available as a reference. One important principle here is the similarity of religions & their origine. I am an ordained Christian minister & will always be yet we must ? the beginning of monotheism & Christianity as we ? everything. For those who are littoral believers, this book can be disturbing but it is always good to see another point of view. Read it. RAG

I recommend this book highly

Sir James Frazer's work is a fascinating look into the scientific approach of the Victorian era. While it has become fashionable to dismiss his work in modern times, his work (especially his lectures, included in the back of the book) speaks volumes for his dedication to knowledge. His meticulous documentation of his sources seems to have helped push forward the scientific community's understanding of the inadequacies of his time period's widespread use of secondary and tertiary sources as no other work could. Between this and his deliberate openness to criticism, Frazer's contribution to the development of modern research techniques is without peer. I recommend this book highly.

What else can I say except this is a classic ...

What else can I say except this is a classic - a treasure-trove of beliefs, rituals and traditions of "Magic" and "Religion" (and wherever the twain, and medicine, do meet). This is an all-encompassing reference book invaluable to those who were mesmerized by Greek mythology, entranced by the sylvan and nature beliefs and rituals of both ancient times and aboriginal practices. Certainly not written with any thought of "political correctness" (Frazer lumps most aboriginal humans - both past and Frazer's present day - as "barbarians" or "savages"), the reader must consider when this was written; yet, one will find terminology still used today (remember the movie "Practical Magic").
