The fundamental idea of Cinderella I suppose, is this :a person in a mean or obscure position, by means of supernatural assisttance, makes a good marriage. This, of course, is the fundamental idea of Puss in Boots. In the former tale the person is usually a girl, in the latter a man. In both tales the supernatural aid, always in Puss in Boots often in Cinderella is given by a beast. Granting the existence of this idea, almost any incidents out of the treasure of popular fancy may be employed to enrich and complicate the plot. Taking Perrault sliterary version as the normal type, the incidents are those of the Unkind Stepmother, I the Jea Ioiis Sisters, the recognition of the heroine by her shoe, and the hostile persons may be forgiven or punished, according to the taste and fancy of the narrator.

About the Author
Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

Yes, I admit, the publisher's description states: "This book may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process."
Talk about the understatement of the year!
Some pages are totally or partially illegible. Some are photocopies of photocopies of photocopies of ... until the page is just a set of random dots, sort of like Braille without the third dimension--or an alphabet. Others are totally black. Not "poor contrast"--just totally black.
"We believe this work is culturally important, and despite the imperfections, have elected to bring it back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide," the publisher goes on to say.
Yes, many of the pages are legible. But surely, with today's huge advances in digitization technology, it's possible to create a legible copy even of poor-quality originals. This IS a valuable work, and I wonder if it wouldn't be worth the time and effort--and cost--to have human beings simply retype the bad pages.
I paid over $30 including shipping for a book that contains many useless pages. Instant waste paper.
This title is also available through Cornell University Library. I'm curious as to whether their scanning process is any better, but not willing to spend another $30 or $40 to find out.
Serious researchers be warned: This is a big book, and lots of information is available on legible or partly legible pages. But it could happen that the part you need is blacked out or lost.

Researching Cinderella

I first found a reference to Marian Roalfe Cox in the index of a Marie Louise von Franz book, An Introduction to the Interpretation of Fairy Tales. I am researching the Cinderella story for my master's thesis, Saving Cinderella: Fairy Tales and the Achievement Gap in Children Ages 6-12. An adjunct of this project is my blog, 365 Cinderellas, accessible at [...], where I am posting a different version of the world wide Cinderella story daily throughout 2011. Joseph Jacobs, English Folklore Society Member and author of English Fairy Tales (Everyman's Library Children's Classics) cites her as a primary resource and authority on Cinderella collections. It is incredible that the Cornell Digital Library and Amazon could find this for me, very inexpensively. The only drawback is that I literally need to read it with a magnifying glass; I think it's printed in 6 pt.font.
