But even�those familiar with how ears can turn into a beak will get a kick out of�the way�Rosenthal and Lichtenheld move the concept forward. The offstage narrators see something interesting: “Hey, look! A duck!” “That’s not a duck. That’s a rabbit!” Then the back and forth begins, with the duck quacking while the rabbit is sniffing, the duck eating bread, the rabbit munching a carrot. In the most clever spread, readers turn the book vertically�to see the duck getting a drink of water, while the rabbit cools its ears. The simple art is reminiscent of Eric Rohmann’s work and will appeal to the same audience. Despite the story�basically being one joke,�the clever tone and the amusing pictures (rendered in ink, watercolor, “and a wee bit of colored pencil”) never let it feel that way. Cute, Cute, Cute! - a review of Duck! Rabbit!

Amy Krouse Rosenthal has written a ton of good books, but I think this has got to be our favorite. "Duck! Rabbit!" is just a lot of fun and my two kids -just turned 7 and 9-- have poured over the book ever since it arrived.

The story's roots are in the age-old optical illusion and Tom Lichtenheld has done a fabulous job in making the image simpler and more kid-friendly while keeping it's dual element (it's a rabbit. No, it's a duck!).

Considerations:::
Duck! Rabbit! is great fun. My kids love both the artwork and dialog.

The book has broad appeal (I thought it was fun) and it ought to appeal to children in the 3ish thru 9ish age range.

It is an Excellent Read-aloud which I think could be used as a primer: the text is large; the sentences simple.

The Accelerated Reading number for Duck! Rabbit! is a generic "1". This means that the vocabulary and syntax have been found to be at the 1st Grade level. The exact month within the 1st Grade hasn't been determined.

Detailed, Advanced First Aid

I have recently read a few books on first responder type medical aid for wilderness scenarios ... and this is BY FAR the best. If you are looking for a book that goes well beyond even advanced first aid, and presents the material in a pratical way using common languge ... this book is it. There is a balance with books like this on either being too elementary (i.e. "dumbed-down") or being too academic (i.e. filled with technical jargon that goes over the head of most people), but this book is a great balance between the two. The author has a gift of explaining things in a very straight-forward fashion.

Astounding Depth and Breadth of Information

This book covers almost every conceivable medical situation you will likely encounter in the field. The only downside is that the book is too big and heavy to carry with you during many of the outdoor activities where you might need it. It is ideal for a survivalist homesteader or other remote but relatively stationary situation, or even as part of a vehicle kit. It includes medications and dosages used to treat various maladies, and would prove an invaluable reference for anyone in an emergency situation away from traditional medical services. It is also a useful tool in creating an emergency medical kit targetted at specific activitied and situations, giving detailed information on the items needed for each type of emergency. Training is key, and no book will ever replace professional emergency medical personnel, but this book uses layman's language to describe medical emergencies and their treatments and can assist you when the professionals are not available.

Take an EMT with you

I bought this because it had great reviews and was touted as the best to have in outdoor medicine. Personally, I was kind of hoping for more of a "this is what you do if you are out here with no help and best ways to treat different possible injuries" kind of book. I was not looking for a "give some of the huge quantity of antibiotics you brought with you, use some of the extensive medical equipment you brought, and medivac immediately" kind of book. If I wanted something like that, at least it could have a list in the back of all equipment and medications used in this book and how to carry that much into the woods/mountains etc. A good first aid guide contains the same info without the medications. Feel like I wasted my money on this.

A wonderful little book detailing the main differences between Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. Theodore Pulcini was a Roman Catholic that converted to Orthodoxy following 7 years of research and contemplation. Whilst brief, the book gets to the point and is an excellent resource for those wanting the fast facts between the two churches.

Clear and Simple

Fr. Pulcini is a former Roman Catholic who converted to Orthodoxy. His book very clearly outlines the major differences between the two churches. This inexpensive book would be good for a Comparative Religions class. Another good one from Conciliar Press is "Orthodoxy: Jewish and Christian" by Fr. James Bernstein.

Butler links assembly with precarity by pointing out that a body suffering under conditions of precarity still persists and resists, and that mobilization brings out this dual dimension of corporeal life. Just as assemblies make visible and audible the bodies that require basic freedoms of movement and association, so do they expose coercive practices in prison, the dismantling of social democracy, and the continuing demand for establishing subjugated lives as mattering, as equally worthy of life. By enacting a form of radical solidarity in opposition to political and economic forces, a new sense of “the people” emerges, interdependent, grievable, precarious, and persistent.

Judith Butler has been saying the same thing for well over a decade, and this is just the latest rehashing of her arguments. There isn't anything compelling in here. If you have never read Butler, this is worth a read. If you have read anything she has written since 2000, you can probably infer everything she says in here.

The increasing need for evaluation of the durability performance of concrete structures has led recently to the development of advanced material models and numerical approaches founded on applied mechanics and computational mechanics. At the same time, the recent and rapid development of new cement-based materials with properties far exceeding conventional concrete standards has been accompanied, in materials science, with new experimental techniques that allowed novel insight into the microstructure of cement-based materials. There is now a need to bridge the gaps between materials science and advanced computational modeling and innovative concrete engineering on the multiple fronts of engineering mechanics, industrial applications, and advanced engineering education. This is the unifying theme of the papers presented at the Sixth International Conference on Creep, Shrinkage and Durability Mechanics of Concrete and other Quasi-Brittle Materials (CONCREEP-6@MIT).
