Most Thorough Theatre Management Book Ever

If you are a serious theatre management student or professional, this is the first book you need to have on your shelf. It is the definitive "Go To" book for all things related to managing theaters and shows, at all levels of the industry.

For example, box office operations and advertising are just as important to Broadway theaters as they are to school and community theaters. The dimensions are different of course - a million dollars a week for the pros, or a thousand dollars a week for schools and communities. But those dollars are equally critical for the economic health of each venue and producing organization. As a result, the book's discussion of box office operations is very relevant to all venues and organizations.

However, just because various performing arts have many things in common, does not mean that solutions to their various concerns are freely interchangeable. Thus, Conte has chapters that focus on the various performance levels - commercial, non-profit theaters, and so on. Within special chapters, the problems and challenges of each type of operation are reviewed in detail.

Conte has a down-to-earth approach to arts production, borne from years of hands-on management experience. Conte says that, in spite of the numerous examples he provides, this is not a "how-to" book. I respectfully disagree. There is so much information contained in this book that any theater manager or producer can learn and use methods and means to accomplish almost any managerial objective. To get a start at achieving anything, the resource to begin with is Theatre Management. As an academic resource, Theatre Management is a veritable encyclopedia of all theatre management.

Absolute Must Have!

Every theatre management book I've picked up, I always considered writing to the author asking for more comprehensive information, examples, charts, figures, varying scenarios, etc.

This book HAS IT ALL. I am completely floored and I not only highly recommend it, but dare to say that if you want to pursue this career, you MUST read it!

Fairly Good Introductory Text

Schneider obviously knows his stuff and this is a good introductio to VB 2012. However, there are just too many exercises with requirements that are not covered in the text. It makes the learning process a bit frustrating.

Defniitely NOT a book to learn the basics...

I received this textbook via my campus bookstore rather than Amazon, but I have to say this has got to be the worst book for beginners to use to learn this language. While the author is very knowledgeable and he covers some great topics, the general ability to learn is hindered by a lack of explanation and the programming projects at the end of the chapters rarely, if at all, are related to anything covered in the text. Other than terminology, all this book taught me was that Google and Stack Exchange reign supreme.

Thoroughly Simple.

Visual Basic is basic programming, however, don't be fooled, programming is not so basic. This book provides very good accounts of the basics of the language and programming itself.

Although it is all about basics, focus on the principles provided in this book and watch them appear again and again in other languages as you move through this exciting world.

Pros:
Simple, easy to understand with lots of exercises to practice in the book.

Cons:
The MyProgrammingLab feature is a...well, scam. You get access to the online version of the book, but in order to be able to get to the online practice exercises, which are required for my class, you have to purchase yet another key to access them. Thus, if you get the book and need to access only the homework feature, buy this book used and save your $$$.

About the Author
Michel Eyquem, Seigneur de Montaigne, was born in 1533, the son and heir of Pierre, Seigneur de Montaigne (two previous children dying soon after birth). He was brought up to speak Latin as his mother tongue and always retained a Latin turn of mind; though he knew Greek, he preferred to use translations. After studying law he eventually became counselor to the Parlement of Bordeaux. He married in 1565. In 1569 he published his French version of the Natural Theology of Raymond Sebond; his Apology is only partly a defense of Sebond and sets skeptical limits to human reasoning about God, man and nature. He retired in 1571 to his lands at Montaigne, devoting himself to reading and reflection and to composing his Essays (first version, 1580). He loathed the fanaticism and cruelties of the religious wars of the period, but sided with Catholic orthodoxy and legitimate monarchy. He was twice elected Mayor of Bordeaux (1581 and 1583), a post he held for four years. He died at Montaigne (1592) while preparing the final, and richest, edition of his Essays.

Anything But ... The Apology for Raymond Sebond

Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) was never famous for staying on topic. The titles of his essays, and this book is his longest essay, are pretexts for writing about what interested him at the time. If you don't know any more about Raymond Sebond after reading this essay than you did before, don't worry about it! If you gave it a slow, thoughtful read, you have experienced one of the greatest minds in all of history asking what was the value of man's mind to arrive at the truth.

The answer could be expressed as the saying for which Montaigne is most famous: "Que scais-je?" or "What do I know?" Reason may be what separates man from the animals, but what benefit has man derived from it? Is he any happier for it? Is he any closer to the ultimate truth?

As one who has loved the _Essaies_ (French for "attempts") for many years, my advice to readers is to take them a little at a time. Don't be put off by all the quotes from Classical Antiquity. This was, after all, the Renaissance; and Montaigne was, like many of his contemporaries, delighted to see reflections of his thoughts in the writings of the Greeks and Romans. (Rabelais in _Gargantua and Pantagruel_ did the same thing.) Many of those quotes are interesting enough to make we want to follow up on Lucretius, Cicero, Marcus Manilius, and others whose names predominate through the essay.

Montaigne had the motto "Que scais-je?" inscribed on the walls of the tower on his property. He was the ultimate skeptic, but (forgive the pun) he essayed to explain his thoughts more thoroughly, perhaps, than any man who ever lived. I heartily suggest you read this, and follow it up with a reading of his greatest essay, "Of Experience."

America's First Civilization

In The Olmecs (2004), Richard Diehl presents a comprehensive summary of the current state of knowledge of America's first civilization. The volume covers Olmec history, daily life and culture, art, and the impact of the Olmec beyond their realm. Much of this information was previously available in scholarly journals only. Many fine illustrations (some in color) fill this book. Throughout the book the author shows how ideas about Olmec history and culture have changed as new information has become available. His enthusiasm for his subject is evident. In the final chapter on Epi-Olmec culture, the author observes "the piedmont and plain between the Tuxtla mountains and the town of Alvarado contain many large unexplored ancient centers." Clearly much more can still be learned about the Olmec, and opportunities exist for enterprising students.

Outstanding book with lots of information

This book was required for a course that I took with Dr. F. Kent Reilly at Texas State University. Between the its outstanding information and the information shared by Dr. Reilly in class, I learned more about the Olmec (or more correctly the Mixe Zoque) than I had ever imagined. Dehl reviews the sites from San Lorenzo to La Venta, he shares Olmec daily life and culture, and discusses Olmec influence in Eastern and Western Mesoamerica, and concludes the book with a look at the Epi-Olmec cultures. To top it off, the price makes this book an easy buy!

This book is an absolute must have for any Mesoamerican or Mixe Zoque enthusiast!

This is an easy-to-read, though technical book. It presents the current state of knowledge of the earliest civilization in Mesoamerica, and the origin of much of what appears in Maya culture later on (calendar, writing, etc.). I am very thankful that the author gives the English measurement equivalents to the metric system, for many of us do not use the metric system and are totally lost when reading about hectares, meters, etc. I recommend this book to anyone interested in New World archaeology and the origins of complex societies.

Schafer, affiliated with the Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm in Petaluma, California, co-founded the first U.S. company to offer organic, domestically grown Chinese medicinal herbs. Great resource

An great resource for those interested in growing Chinese medicinal herbs. The book covers a wide range of the most commonly used herbs and provides plenty of detail on propagating, growing, and harvesting of the herbs as well as expected yields. The reader needs to remember that the author is in California, so the information on plant spacing, best soil/light conditions, etc. sometimes needs a little modification for growers elsewhere (i.e. the east coast), but the suggestions in the book are an excellent starting point.
