About the Author
Jason De Le�n is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan and Director of the Undocumented Migration Project, a long-term anthropological study of clandestine border crossings between Mexico and the United States. I think this book gives great insight on what migrants have to go through when crossing them border to get to America. Even though I do not agree with what the author said about some things, this book was written very well and drew me in from the moment I started reading this book. I would definitely recommend people to read this book to learn a bit about migration and immigration policies.

Excellent book, although the layout is a tad chaotic

Excellent book, although the layout is a tad chaotic, mixing C# versions. I've been doing C# constantly since 1.0, so I only care what's in C# 6.0 for my current project. But that's a tiny complaint; the book is thorough and very helpful. Worth every dollar.

The book was quite helpful modernizing a largish VS 2008 project to vs 2015. It was relatively easy to search for "C# 6" to find all the ways to improve the applications.

This is my "go to" book for learning .NET Framework features

I have to start out by saying I'm a big fan of Mark Michaelis and have had the pleasure of hearing him speak and a .NET User Group meeting. At that time his book was called Essential C# 3.0 for .NET framework 3.5.

I'm a consultant and this is crucial material to help prepare me for technical interviews and just overall day-day coding examples. Examples are clean and concise. This is my "go to" book for learning .NET Framework features. I have to say I'm lagging a bit on all the new changes so I was excited to find out that this book just released an update for C# version 6.

There have been many improvements in the language since the 3.0 book and this book has outlined those changes in a rather unique way. There is a main index listing all keywords and then a "topics" index organized by language version number. We also get the added benefit version tags, highlighting the version number within the text of the book. The versions are interlaced sequentially in a chapter rather than segmented out. That is you start out by reading about anonymous methods (C# 2.0) and segue in lambdas (C# 3.0) by the end of the chapter you are reading about a (C# 5.0) improvement called capturing loop variables. In this way, you see the evolution of the language. Really cool.

The C#/.NET version tags are very helpful. I typically skip the introduction because I already know all that basic stuff but saw a 6.0 version tag with a little gem called "string interpolation" on page 20 - It's a shorthand way of coding string.Format. I would have missed the new feature had it not been for the tag.

The C# version number is clearly highlighted so you know at all times what version you are reading about. If you need to find a specific feature use the full index. If you want to find new features to a specific language version, then use "Index of 6.0 Topics", "Index of 5.0 Topics", etc. This is the best approach to trying to index the massive amount of info. And this book is massive! I'm enjoying going thru it again as a review, but more importantly as an enhancement to my 6.0 knowledge. Thank you guys for this recent update.

Hidden treasure

I was looking for a book to fill in my gap of multithreading since the release of C# 6.0. I was going from book-to-book on Safari, looking for information about multithreading and thread synchronization when I came across this book. The explanation of these two topics was so good I knew I had to read the whole book.

The book does have an unusual layout. It describes how C# has changed since version 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and C# 6.0. If you want to "really" know C#, by all means- buy this book. Thank you, Mr Michaelis.

From the first, things look unfortunate indeed for the trio: a fire destroys their home, killing their parents along with it; the executor of their parents' estate, the obtuse Mr. Poe (with a son, Edgar), ignores whatever the children have to say; and their new guardian, Count Olaf, is determined to get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune. But by using their individual gifts (Violet's for inventing, Klaus's for reading and researching and baby Sunny's for biting) the three enterprising children thwart the Count's planAfor now. The author uses formal, Latinate language and intrusive commentary to hilarious effect, even for readers unfamiliar with the literary conventions he parodies. Grade 4-6-This series chronicles the unfortunate lives of the Baudelaire children: Violet, 14; Klaus, 12; and the infant, Sunny. In Bad Beginning, their parents and possessions perish in a fire, and the orphans must use their talents to survive as their lives move from one disastrous event to another. Surrounded by dim-witted though well-meaning adults, the Baudelaires find themselves in the care of their evil relative, Count Olaf, a disreputable actor whose main concern is getting his hands on the children's fortune. When Olaf holds Sunny hostage to force Violet to marry him, it takes all of the siblings' resourcefulness to outwit him. Violet's inventive genius, Klaus's forte for research, and Sunny's gift for biting the bad guys at opportune moments save the day. However, the evil Count escapes, only to return in The Reptile Room just as the children are settling into a far more pleasant life with their new guardian, Uncle Monty, who is promptly murdered by Olaf and his cohorts. Though the villain escapes again, and beloved Uncle Monty is dead, the children are safe...for now. While the misfortunes hover on the edge of being ridiculous, Snicket's energetic blend of humor, dramatic irony, and literary flair makes it all perfectly believable. The writing, peppered with fairly sophisticated vocabulary and phrases, may seem daunting, but the inclusion of Snicket's perceptive definitions of difficult words makes these books challenging to older readers and excellent for reading aloud.

A great addition to the Series of Unfortunate Events

A series of unfortunate events is an evolving tale which while aimed at children, can be very dark and starting this series you should be aware this book continues that legacy. While book one seemed fairly innocuous in lacking and on screen character deaths (book two technically does too) this is the first time you are introduced to a character that you will both appreciate and will not make it to the end.

If you are familiar with the movie you may recall Jim Carey's over the top depiction of count Olaf. In the first book (and I believe I remarked in the review) the character of Olaf is much less of a bumbling idiot than a calculating and cold villain. I appreciate that a great deal in the book and this book continues to give the character a very real sense of menace and foreboding. There are plenty of instances in the movie where I thought the children could of made a bigger effect to make their predicament known where as in the book the children make every reasonable effort. Olaf for his part actually makes much more visible efforts to block them and these efforts are all the more menacing and frightening.

Additionally I found the adults to be a little more realistic in this book than in the movie and book two is an improvement from book one. While I do find Lemon's commentary about how terrible their lives to be a little over the top, as was in book one, in book two I actually start to really see how they really are suffering. I took this to be a big improvement.

I would recommend this book and will continue to read the series, but I should warn anyone planning to read this to their children that the dark nature is starting to rear its head and might not be appropriate for some of the very young.

Same old, same old, but with a twist.

Though this is only the second book, it feels like the same method has been overused. I mean seriously, you know that the orphans go to new guardians, and encounter Count Olaf over and over, but in different ways. So what is to look forward to in this book? Well not much, but if you really want to know, then its the drama, and well...the small time of happiness the Baudelaires experienced with Uncle Monty (I actually enjoyed that). I will split this into several parts to make it easier to understand, also I will show my opinion of Olaf and how he got into the Baudelaires world.

Drama: This was the first book in the series, to have a murder of a Guardian. This death was actually expected, in my opinion. This is because, we already know what Count Olaf would do to get these miserable orphans fortune, so why not expect him to kill as well?

OLAF AND HIS DISGUISES: I personally got a kick out of his disguise in this book. It was simple, yet the fact he had convinced everyone he was "Gunther" made the whole disguise even funnier. It actually was funny, when the Baudelaires found him out the second they saw him. I mean I find it ironic, that no one recognized him, and the only people who did recognize him where the Baudelaires.

HIS PLAN: I think that his plan to gain the Baudelaire fortune, was stupid. I mean seriously, he tried to frame Uncle Monty's vast collection of snakes, on Monty's death. He left so much evidence around Uncle Monty, that only an idiot would miss it. Apparently everyone in this series are actually idiots and show ignorance, except the Baudelaires, if you haven't noticed. Well back to the plan, then Olaf was going to take the orphans to Peru, which was the trip Monty was going to take them on. Olaf would have full control over the orphans if Monty had died, and according to his plan, they would leave before any police or any official awareness.

Plot Development: No plot development at all. Actually there is no plot development until the fifth book.

Characters: (Old/reoccurring: Sunny, Violet, Klaus Baudelaire. Mr Poe. Count Olaf and his troup.)(New: Uncle Monty, Gustav.)

Final Review: 3/5

Verdict: This book did not contribute to the story growth. Therefore I call this a filler chapter, and is a part of Act 1 of the story. Good book at times, but same old. Boring, might entertain some.

I am a private tutor. Many students come to me as struggling and/or reluctant readers. These humorously unfortunate stories are great for motivating students to want to read. Lemony Snicket artfully introduces and explains new vocabulary words and then weaves them into the stories so that students see them used contextually several times. The series is particularly appealing to 4th and 5th grade girls.

About the Author

Robert Lafore has degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics, has worked as a systems analyst for the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, founded his own software company, and is a best-selling writer in the field of computer programming. Some of his current titles are C++ Interactive Course and Object-Oriented Programming in C++. Earlier best-selling titles include Assembly Language Primer for the IBM PC and XT and (back at the beginning of the computer revolution) Soul of CP/M.

Best Data Structure/Algorithm Book on the Market for the Vast Majority of Developers"

As someone who does not come from a computer science background but works as a software engineer, I've had learning data structures and algorithms on my bucket list for quite some time. Working within the Ruby on Rails and SQL worlds has had me heavily shielded from the ideas and concepts of DS&A. My primary goal was to learn enough to pass the stereotypical Google/Amazon/Microsoft/Yahoo coding exam as well as conduct a similar engineering interview from the opposite end of the table. Since textbooks are my preferred way of learning, I set out in search of the DS&A book that would allow me to reach that goal.

Most guru lists will tell you that "Introduction to Algorithms" aka "CLRS" is the book to buy in this field. I would strongly disagree with this notion unless the reader is already very savvy in DS&A as well as mathematics. From my experience interviewing dozens of engineers over the last few months, a very small percentage of engineers are actually at that level. Similar lists recommend Skiena's book as an alternative to CLRS since it is slightly more accessible. Although I didn't look at Skiena's book as thoroughly as I did CLRS, it didn't seem to be much more beginner friendly. I initially ended up buying the "DS&A Made Easy" book--the reviews were good, the pages available via Amazon preview looked good, the book focused on DS&A from an interview perspective rather than mathematical proofs, and I also liked the author's stated approach (get something working, even if its terribly inefficient...then work on efficiency). Then the book came in the mail. After a week of browsing through the text, I actually threw the book in the trash. The English was bad, the code examples weren't well written, and there was a lot of hand waving where there shouldn't have been.

Then I found LaFore. His writing is extremely clear and never pretentious. The order in which he tackles DS&A topics is much more logical than the other texts I've seen. The Java code in each of the in-chapter exercises works perfectly. The charts and drawings are very helpful. The author knows exactly how far to take the discussion so that the reader is learning a concept thoroughly but not being beaten over the head with it or taken too far down the rabbit hole. I became more comfortable with the Java language itself working through the coding problems in this book than I did using a pure "Learn Java"-type book in the past. I read this book cover to cover over the course of a few months and can't say enough good things about it. No longer are DS&A initimidating to me.

For me, the most difficult subjects by far were recursion and red-black trees. In fact, unlike any of the other topics listed above, coding a red-black tree is beyond the scope of this book.

In summary, this book may be the best technical text I have ever read (and I usually read 3-4 per year). I've read a handful of technical textbooks that were about simpler topics, were more complex reads, and I would still consider them good to great books. In fact, LaFore's DS&A book is so exceptional that I even considered buying his 11 year old C++ book to learn C++, even though learning C++ isn't on my bucket list.

My recommendation list for DS&A related works is as follows:

-If you are a DS&A beginner, choose LaFore's DS&A in Java book (most people fall into this category).

-If you are looking for more formal technical interview prep, buy one of Gayle Laakman's books as a companion piece. Laakman's works typically don't teach you DS&A themselves but prepare you for how you'll typically see them in an interview.

-If you are already very strong in DS&A and are looking for something beyond what you'd see in a typical technical interview, look into CLRS, Skiena, Sedgewick (who LaFore strongly recommends for further reading) or if you're really an expert--(gulp) Donald Knuth.

Excellent book

Just about every Computer Science program requires a course called "Data Structures and Algorithms". In order to become a programmer you must understand the information provided in this course. This book was written as a textbook for a "Data Structures and Algorithms" course and all the expected topics are covered; arrays, queues, stacks, linked lists, trees, hash tables, heaps, sorting, recursion, and searching. Whether you are a teacher looking for a text, a student who wants a better text than the required one, or just someone who wants to learn more about programming, this book is a very good choice. By using Java, all the complications of C++ are eliminated and the author's crystal clear explanations come shining through. And the author's explanations and examples are excellent. For example, the chapter on link lists explains what a linked list is, what problems it is supposed to solve and what problems it fails to solve, and then shows how to implement your own link list. The author provides a set of applets to visually illustrate the topics covered in the book. There are questions at the end of each chapter and answers are provided. This book is not going to explain the Collection classes or help you learn the API. What this book will do is help you get a deeper understanding of what data structures are, how they work, and what performance sacrifices must be made in order to achieve better overall performance in your programs.

Great Book on Data Structures

This is an excellent book on data structures and algorithms and would be a great addition to a student's text book. Fortunately Lafore does not dwell on the algorithm analysis as many data structures books do. This is a plus for me, as most texts on the subject get the reader bogged down in the analysis portion of the subject matter. Note: algorithm analysis is a very important subject I just don't believe it should be taught in parallel with data structures to the extent it is. Its easier for me and many others to first learn how to implement data structures and get a feel for their performance then move on to in-depth analysis.
In this book you'll learn the more important data structures without the heavy mathematics many algorithm and data structure books torture readers with. The book is written in very accessible language and the applets really help the inexperienced see the algorithms in action.
As I mentioned this book does not cover algorithm analysis in detail. A step up from this book would be one of Sedgewick's books which provides more detail on the analysis front and some really 'tight' implementations. A good book that focuses on Algorithm Analysis is Intro to Algorithms by Cormen. You better have your math skills up to snuff for the Cormen book however.
