Beautiful Introduction

I find the approach in this book to fuzzy logic interesting, useful, simple, and beautiful. Starting with something like interval numbers is almost certainly the best way to start a fuzzy logic text. It presents a simple example that is very easily understood and allows one to see what differentiates fuzzy logic from other multi-valued logics in an almost intuitive manner.

I have not worked through all of this book. But, while working through the truth table exercises in Chapter 8 I thought 'couldn't I do these on a spreadsheet like Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Works?' With Bojadziev's formulations how to produce truth tables on a spread sheet (I used Microsoft Works) came almost immediately. (The only real exception was that I had to treat fractional truth values, as functions. Expressly, in Works you type =1/2 in the cell.) To paraphrase Betrand Russell (correct this if I have the author wrong), 'a good notation has a certain suggestion to it.'

Since I did this, I noticed some textual errors. p. 164, (g) reads [~p->(q^~q)]->~p proof by contradiction. This is not a tautology. The tautological form, I think, Bojadziev is looking for is either [p->(q^~q)]->~p, or more likely [~p->(q^~q)]->p. Also, on p. 165 p^(p->q) should not read (1 0 1 0, which is q^(p->q) in context), but

0. Additionally, on p. 267 8.5 (a) for p->~q should read

(0 1/2 1 1/2 1 1 1 1 1).

Still, Bojadziev's notation is the most helpful I have seen for fuzzy logic texts. The notation helped me to think of simpler ways to deal with truth tables. This also allowed me to check many different forms of tautologies and see if they are tautologies in other than 2-value logics. For instance, modus tollens is only a quasi-tautology in greater than 2-valued logics (I have investigated up to 11-valued logics, and no doubt, this could be proven for all n-valued crisp logics). Modus ponens is a tautology for n-valued logics, where n is greater than 2 (at least up to an 11-valued logic, and no doubt this can be proven). This suggests, on a logical basis, that falsifiability is not as strong a criterion as verification. Without this book, such insights would have not happened or would have been much harder.

About the Author

Mike J.�Stabler is�Senior Research Fellow at the�University of Reading; his principal research has been on the environmental impacts of economic activity focusing on the tourism sector, published in journals and books. He was joint author of the original edition of this book.

Andreas Papatheodorou is Assistant Professor at the University of the Aegean, Greece, and Honorary Research Fellow at the Nottingham University Business School, UK. His tourism research focuses on competition, pricing and corporate strategy in air transport, cruising and travel distribution and has been published in international academic journals.

Prior to her death in 2006, Professor M.�Thea Sinclair was Director of the Tourism and Travel Research Institute (TTRI) in the Business School of the University of Nottingham.

Excellent guide to a neglected topic

The second edition of Economics of Tourism is a welcome update to a classic text. The authors provide as complete a review on the subject as can be found anywhere. This is an outstanding guide to an under appreciated and under studied area of economics.

About the Author
Richard S. Sharf has been a counseling psychologist at the Center for Counseling and Student Development at the University of Delaware for 37 years, providing counseling to university students. He also was the internship coordinator for the Psychology Doctoral Internship program. In addition, he taught graduate courses in counseling in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. In writing THEORIES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELING: CONCEPTS AND CASES, he corresponded with over 70 experts on theories of psychotherapy to ensure that the book is accurate and up to date. He is also author of APPLYING CAREER DEVELOPMENT THEORY TO COUNSELING, 6th Edition (©2014, Cengage Learning).

Good theory book, but slightly overpacked with info

I used this book for my Theory class in a CACREP program. Overall, it was a decent book packed with a lot of relevant information. However, the book was VERY dense. I think Sharf could have made the book much more concise by eliminating or consolidating some sections, particularly the last sections in every chapter (such as the "gender" and "multicultural" sections). Regardless, I will definitely use this as a reference when I'm studying for the NCE.

Full disclosure: I don't have a lot to compare this to. The book does cover the major theories of counseling from a Western historical perspective, and is fairly comprehensive and very simple to read/navigate. I bought the Kindle version, which I'd highly recommend (but note that some sections were removed in the Kindle ver. due to "copyright" issues). The book does have a chapter at the end discussing "other therapies", which acknowledges the lack of coverage of more recent developments as well as the "Asian therapies". There's a LOT of over-generalization in the latter category, unfortunately. The writing quality in the last few chapters declines noticeably, and is sometimes almost shockingly bad - not sure if these were written by a different contributing author?

Not very thorough

This book is alright but there are so many better books on Embryology out there that I have to give low stars to this book. First of all, it does not go into good details. If you get confused or stuck on a point, there is absolutely no elaboration-- you have to go look it up on Google. If this is your first time taking Embryology, I guarantee you that you're going to get confused in just the 2nd and 3rd chapter. I prefer Human Embryology & Developmental Biology by Bruce M. Carlson because that book is quite detailed and it's written so that you understand exactly what's going on. The pictures are detailed and just enough "extra" info is provided as not to bog you down into details but still be able to understand the book if you get stuck somewhere. I, honestly, didn't even bother with this book for the class except for the clinicals in the blue boxes. Everything else, I just referred to my Human Embryo book.

Why no page numbers?

I don't like the fact that all kindle books don't use page numbers. It uses location numbers. This is a text book and my professor assigns reading pages based on page number not location numbers. So I have to find someone with a hard copy to find what I am looking for. I don't recommend using kindle for text books for this exact reason.

The usefulness of this book depends on your previous knowledge of embryology. If you have a solid background in the subject, this book is great at getting key concepts across rather effectively.

However, if your background in embryology isn't solid this book can be a nightmare at times. Topics are interjected haphazardly into other topics without proper introduction, and descriptions can often be unclear. As other reviewers have stated, you will have to search outside of this textbook for thorough explanations.

I gave this text 2/5 stars because it falls short of being elaborated enough for educational purposes, while simultaneously not containing the specific, factual information needed as a clinical reference.
