About the Author
Margaret Stevens, who wrote and coordinated this book, is the Society's president and a founding member. She holds numbers RHS medals, including the prestigious Gold Medal. While working as a freelance artist and illustrator she has also taught botanical painting to adult students for more than 20 years, and this book reflects her awareness of their challenges when using color and purchasing paints. Previous publications include a practical guide to drawing flowers, as well as The Art of Botanical Painting.
The Society of Botanical Artists was founded in 1985 to bring together artists of repute in this field. Members include winners of prestigious awards, including the Royal Horticulturaly Society's Gold and Silver-Gilt medals, and their work is held in collections worldwide.

This is a very nice book, made with lavish attention to detail

This is a very nice book, made with lavish attention to detail . Even the smallest illustration on these pages is a work of art , one would love to frame nearly every page of it . Not only that , but they are nearly all done by a different artist , so you get an oversight of all the best botanical artists around and their particular styles . I'm now a fan of Sally Keir's work in gouache . A joy to look at her work , it's a play with light . I wish the book was thicker , specially the section of drawing with colored pencils , but I'm very pleased with what I got . It is a very complete book on drawing plants , with detailed instructions on how to draw in pencil , then pencil and ink , colored pencil , gouache , watercolors , every style and technique possible are mentioned and shown . Flowers , with a detailed chart of how they flower , leaves , also with a chart of how the different leaves look like , fruit , vegetables and mushrooms ...all you can desire to draw or paint .

A showcase of botanical artists

This book shows the work of several botanical artists. It is enjoyable to look through but for anyone wanting a step by step, this isn't one. There are the usual sections on materials and color mixing but the information on the work is mostly about what colors are used. Still, I am pleased I have the book.

This is a beautifully illustrated and informative book. I bought it as a relative beginner and it serves my purpose exceedingly well with detailed instructions and illustrations. I took it to our Botannical Art Society meeting and it was instantly recognised and admired.
