Very nice!

If you love "campus" kind of tales, you will love this book. I don't, yet I found this nice. The narrative is mostly a first person account of the protagonist, Zorawar. He sets out to narrate his story about love, longing, friends, career, jobs and ultimately, the quest to find one's purpose in life.

The novel is a quick read, though the story is deeply philosophical and evocative in parts. The language is extremely slick and contemporary, and many in the younger crowd of India will identify with the characters and the settings.

Boys/men may perhaps like this novel better than girls/women, mainly because the story is mostly recollections of, and musings on, various incidents in the life and times of Zorawar and his three-four male friends. Also, Non-NLS readers may at times find the narrative slightly autochthonous to NLS (Bangalore). But, neither of these should be an impediment to enjoying the story otherwise.

I would have rated this not higher than 2.5 stars had it been a professional writer writing this. But the fact that its written by a young person who is otherwise tending to the needs of full-time law practice to eek a living, makes this a great and commendable attempt! Also, I think Sarna's command over the English language is fantastic, and the things most Indian's are notorious at -- improper syntax and limited lexicon, is refreshingly not of concern in his writing. Hence 4 stars!

I'd recommend this book to anybody looking for a book about college. Whether you're looking to relive your time in college, or get an idea of what to expect, or just trying to figure out what you're doing right or wrong, this book is worth a read. It's fast moving, interesting and well written.

Dr. Woodward was professor of Latin American history at the University of North Carolina (1963-1970), Tulane University (1970-1999), and Texas Christian University (1999-2003). He also was a Visiting Professor at the National and Catholic Universities of Chile and Argentina, and at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. His earlier publications on Central American history include Class Privilege and Economic Development: The Consulado de Comercio of Guatemala, 1793-1871 ( University of North Carolina Press, 1966); Research Guide to Central America and the Caribbean (University of Wisconsin Press, 1985); Central America: Historical Perspectives on the Contemporary Crises (Greenwood Press, 1988); Guatemala (World Bibliographic Series, 1992); Rafael Carrera and the Emergence of the Republic of Guatemala, 1821-1871 (University of Georgia Press, 1993); and Central America: A Nation Divided (3rd ed., Oxford University Press, 1999).

Clear & concise synthesis

Excellently written: Mr. Woodward breezes through the history of Guatemala, highlighting not just events but the currents and influences that shaped these, producing a highly readable document, one that adds substantially to the understanding of the country as it exists today. It is ideal for students, travelers, and businessmen who are both new to the subject and don't have the interests of a scholar, but for those who wish to delve further, he supplies and in-depth bibliography. However, for those who have read other histories of that country, they will either admire or resent his neutrality. In writing his history Mr Woodward is trying to explain how things happened, rather than prove a point. For example, his section on the American overthrow of the government of Arbenz provides an excellent review of the context that led to this American intervention, but refrains from expressing judgments - he lets the reader decide for himself.

I cannot imagine learning more in a university course. Guatemala is a wonderful country that has been invaded, stepped on, lied to, and held captive. Mr. Woodward, Jr. has been able to weave an interesting story from cold, hard facts.

The potential is here for an absolutely spectacular book, if only they would do a proofread!

I have the predecessor to this book by DK and I can say that this updated version is certainly head and shoulders above the original in terms of the explanatory content and illustrations. The writing is, for the most part, clear and succinct. The illustrations surpass any other medical text I have encountered thus far.

I would absolutely love to give this book a five-star rating. However, there was a failure on the part of the authors to perform a careful proofread before this book went to print. There are quite a few gramatical errors and in some of the illustrations the leader lines point to the wrong structures, which can cause confusion for the reader or student of human anatomy.

I discovered this new edition at my local library in their new books section a few weeks ago. The binding was already coming apart, though it had not been on the shelf long.

I am hoping that the binding on the copy I purchased will hold up better.

The Human Body, 2nd Edition - WOW !!!!!

The Human Body 2nd Edition was published in February 2013 as an update to the 6 year old original. Amazon.com reviews of the 1st edition were consistently positive with more than 86% 5-stars. In the two month since publication, there are still no reviews on the 2nd edition, but all the good features described in previous reviews should still apply and the new edition can only be described as fantastic.

This is a large format book (10" x 12") with large, detailed, color 2D/3D illustrations and photos of all the human body systems, structure and organs. Descriptions of the various topics are detailed without being too wordy or the use of excessive complex medical jargon. This book should be perfect for anyone that just wants to understand what is going on inside their body or even students in beginning anatomy classes. The included DVD-ROM (Not a Video DVD) is also great, with interactive overviews of body structures using multi-level 3D illustrations and detailed descriptions by simply mousing-over the area of interest. Unfortunately, the book's web page on amazon.com does not (yet) have the "look inside" features that would actually show how well the information is presented in this book - see this feature on the 1st edition web page for similar information. The book must be seen for the quality to be fully appreciated.

"The Human Body" will take you through each of the 11 bodily systems like an atlas learning about their specialties.The body's vital organs along with their functioning are explained, connecting their affiliation to a respective body systems in they which operate. You'll learn that the bodies organs are integrated, operating in more than one system and the nuanced partnership between systems in their workings of bodily functions.

After each function of the systems are explored, the sections end with system abnormality relating to injury, disease, and malfunction. Starting at the cellular-level then moving to the development, and eventual decline of the body, "The Human Body" provides a solid, thorough guild about the human body bringing together the full scientific explanation of the body's natural process, capabilities, susceptibilities, and its amazing function as an organic machine!

This book can be used as a study guild or for knowledge acquisition. The information is easy to understand and the illustration serves as a perfect auxiliary for memorization. To me, it this is the perfect source of information to reference from and apply.

Book 2 started off with a bang and continued with its momentum. Gage' s father ego knows no bounds. He'll sell out his own children if it means the pursuit of his own power. He is willing to let his own granddaughter to be killed. And he only let Gage live because he saw him as tool to use in his master plan. Spoiler alert, let's not forget he even sanction the the hit on his lover's family.

Furthermore I still keep keep wondering if Dax and Blythe will ever hook up. How will Blythe react to Gage not being dead? And I want to see more on the relationship of Janika and the Professor. Will the public ever find out about the government involvement with the Rejects. And can modern society ever reconsil robotic human with normal humans; even within families? This book is full of questions. I am eagerly waiting on book 3.

After reading the first book The Bionics I instantly fell in love with the characters and the story so naturally i read book 2 and i have to say this book was intense!!! There was so much action going on i had to know what happened next. I couldnt put this book down. The suspense and twists and turns left me begging for more.especially after that ending wahh!!
This book had me going through so many emotions. Seriously so much stuff happened I cant even get into it without giving anything away. All i can say is I laughed, I yelled, and I cried like a baby and you will too. You wont regret picking up this novel which is just as fantastic, if not better, than the original. The edgier tone will leave you breathless and dying for book 3. Definitely get yours today you wont regret it!!

Interesting Lecture

This paperback book is actually one of three lectures by Albert Pike. It mainly speaks to the doctrines of Zarathustra, and the history and legends of the Iranian branch, familiarly known as the Medes and Persians of the great Aryan race. He skips around and quotes other authors/scholars on many of the topics, which helps in understanding. It is not an easy read for the average lay person, and I re-read many pages in order to better grasp the meanings. Being a person who searches for the truth about everything, through historical documentation - especially things of religious origins, I found the lecture extremely interesting. The Gathas are sacred, short prayers, whose meaning, as well as the dialect, is hard to interpret. Albert Pike does a good job of enlightening us as to their probable meanings in this lecture. The supposed Trinity of Zarathustra was "Thought, Word, Deed or Act." I found that many of the same precepts in the doctrine of Zarathustra can be found in later Christianity. This lecture is not for the average, close-minded person, but to the truth-seekers, it will be an interesting, if not easy, read.

Excellent Lecture .

This book is very informative and a very valuable document of the history of an ancient religion in Persia . The author truly represents the doctrine of Zarathustra and quotes other authors who have studied this ancient prophets life . The book explains well The Aryan Race which is very interesting for me who wishes to learn more of her background . I recommend this book for every person who has a passion in history of the ancient civilization . I also find it extremely helpful when author explains the roots of Persian language and the language of Avesta , Zoraoasterian holly book.
I'm reading this book with an open mind and share my thoughts with my family and friends on this tolerant and amazing doctrine of an ancient religion which inspired our heart & soul .

A Good Introduction to Duras

"10:30 on a Summer Night" is by far the best of the four novels in this book, focusing on murder and infidelity during a vacation outside Madrid. "Moderato Cantible" is good but not as intriguing as "10:30 on a Summer Night" and is about an alcoholic mother developing an odd relationship with a stranger in a caf� on the way home from her son's piano lesson. "The Square" has some good lines but is generally slow, focusing solely on a salesman and a servant talking in the park.

Save The Lover for later; start with the novellas.

Duras seems like the Simone Weil of fiction: her characters philosophize while they get undressed and into bed. While Duras covers the same material (man, woman, love, deceit) at least these are fine subjects in the hands of a master crafter. I don't think we can hold it against her for writing them over and over.

The truths of love and suffering.

(The Square, Moderato Cantabile, 10:30 on a Summer Night, The Afternoon of Mr. Andesmas.)

Spying this book in my hand, my husband asked suspiciously, "Is that one of those books that only you like - the kind with completely no plot?"

I assured him that only one of the four novellas has almost no plot - The Square - and I admitted that, yes, I loved it. Just a housemaid and a wanderer talking in the park as the light fades - it is enough. Especially when the characters are forever saying things like, "Either I shall be unhappy in the same way as everyone else is, or I shall not be unhappy at all."

The third novella, 10:30 on a Summer Night, succeeds as a work of suspense and floats through the mind like an art house film. (My husband seeks PLOT, honest-to-god dramatic action - I promised him he'd enjoy it.)

The fourth, The Afternoon of Mr. Andesmas, proceeds like the late afternoon light in the story, gradually revealing the landscape and the figures within it. It made me realize that I'd perhaps never read a story about a rich old man who was also dignified and loving. I found it marvelous.

Only the second novella, Moderato Cantabile, seemed less interesting, an imitation of the others, with several passages which I admit I found repeatedly incomprehensible - though its account of vomiting at a dinner part is. . . nearly as riveting as being in the same situation oneself.

The second and the third novellas made me wonder if anyone has ever taught on a course on "the Literature of Alcoholism" - let's say: Hemingway, Hart Crane, Flann O'Brien, Barthelme and Duras. It often seems to me that alcoholic writers belong to the same drunken nation. A sad, funny and charming country - though it is sometimes hard to resist the temptation to count bottles.

These books are experiments - and 50 to 80 pages is a perfect length for an experiment. To me it seems unfortunate that fiction is so often limited to stories under 15 pages and novels over 250. I sometimes wonder if the length in-between might be more conducive to the form.

Duras does away with the excessive characterization, plotting and description that often weigh on the novel. Like an ancient Buddhist scripture translated from a palm leaves, these novels seek to approach life and suffering directly - the honest ache of which they speak may come as a relief.
