About the Author
Ellen Braaten, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She is also a child psychologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital, where she coordinates the Child Psychology Internship Program. Dr. Braaten is the coauthor of Straight Talk about Psychological Testing for Kids and has authored numerous scientific papers and chapters on child assessment, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and learning disabilities.

All-around wonderful tool

I'm not sure why this is titled the CC's Report-Writing Handbook, when it helps with so much more than just report-writing. It's a GREAT tool for clinicians because it offers wonderful writing suggestions (e.g. descriptions of appearance, personality, engagement) along with quick-review summaries of the DSM codes and psychoeducational assessments, plus more. I am so glad my advisor lent this book to me - I had to get my own copy!

International Mergers and acquisitions are en vogue today. The advantages quoted by managers include advantages of scale, increased shareholder value, access to new markets, lower overheads and so on. The number of international mergers and acquisitions between German and American companies increased a lot during the last years, as well. At the beginning there are high hopes and elation connected with the deal. But the long-term reality, however, is much the opposite. At least 50 percent of all international mergers and acquisition activity fails, no matter how the success is measured. There are also lots of companies who failed, who are therefore not able to benefit from some positive synergy effects like cost reductions. Why did that happen? A survey tried to analyze the reasons for this. The surprising result was that just 30% of the failures were attributed to the "hard factors" of business, like planning, finance or technology. For the rest, the reason lay in the so-called "soft factors", which contain cultural and organizational behaviour. Somewhat less acknowledged, although hardly disputed, is the positive and negative impact of cultural aspects on the success of M&A activity. The following work reveals the differences between American and German business culture and also analyzes its historical and social background. Thereby, the main goal is to disprove that American and German business styles are almost similar. Furthermore, at the end the reader should know more about the existing differences between the two

The only reference Guide to American Clipper Ships available

This excellent reference guide originally published by the Marine Research Society in Salem, Mass. in 1926-27, actually consists of two Volumes:
Vol 1: Adelaide-Lotus: ISBN: 0486251152
Vol 2: Malay-Young Mechanic: ISBN: 0486251160
Volume 1 covers all American Clipper Ships built from 1833-1858 whose names begin with the letters A through L, and Volume 2 covers from M through Y. I don't know why they are offered separately, as Volume 1 also contains the introduction and Volume 2 the Index, so it makes no sense to purchase these separately. Also the pagination is consecutive. The brief introduction explains the criteria used to define a Clipper Ship, which is a ship "...of peculiar construction, designed for great speed rather than for capacity." (p.v) The authors Octavius T. Howe and Frederick C. Matthews consider the "Ann McKim" launched at Baltimore in 1833 to be the first Clipper, and the era of the Clipper to be over by 1858 with the launching of "The Star of Peace" at Newburyport. The books are basically listings of all 352 known Clipper Ships arranged alphabetically. Some entries are brief; others however are quite lengthy and include excerpts of contemporary descriptions in the Press and in Correspondence. It seems that the Sailing Records of Ships were of great interest to the authors, so the records of the fastest voyages on several routes can be found in these books. The Index includes not only the names of Ships, but also of Captains, Owners and Builders. Also included are reproductions of about 100 paintings and some drawings. These have not fared so well in the reprint edition, and their quality is sometimes not so good, but many are still helpful. This almost 800 page long book can be used as a reference book, or as a book just to page around. Original editions are quite hard to come by and expensive, so this reprint edition is very reasonably priced and a welcome addition to any Bookshelf of Maritime History.

What research the authors made in this and it's companion volume!!If you love the Clippers get these,they are detailed with the history of each ship,speed and anything pertinent to each of them. with many pix to boot.Two volumes,remember.

Older printed edtions far superior to the new "photocopied" reproductions.

The two volume set is wonderful for maritime/history buffs and model ship builders. Detailed specs for each ship are given and interesting stories of the ship's careers are included, often ending in shipwreck, giving readers some great insight into the hazards and adventures clipper ships and crews faced in that time period. Highly recommended.

The reason I only give it three stars is because earlier copies of these books were printed in Canada and in those editions the printing and black/white illustrations are very good. The new editions by DOVER publications are now "printed" in the USA and these are apparently photo copies with a decidedly worse sharpness to the print font and DISMAL reproductions of the clipper ship drawings. The "copied" version is only a FAIR reproduction at best and a poor substitute for an actual printing press. I highly recommend trying to purchase the older, used, Canadian copies which would rate the full five stars.

Mark Singleton is a long-term research fellow at the American Institute of Indian Studies and teaches at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His publications include Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern Posture Practice.

James Mallinson is a lecturer in Sanskrit and Classical and Indian Studies at SOAS, University of London. He has published eight books, all of which are editions and translations of Sanskrit yoga texts, epic tales, and poetry. His recent work has used philological study of Sanskrit texts, ethnography, and art history to explore the history of yoga and yogis.

A Marvelous Collection

My first reaction when I saw this new publication was, “Oh no, not another yoga book.” Once I received it and saw what was inside I realized I was very wrong. This may not be the best collection of yogic writings, but it is certainly one of the best. It is a worth-while piece in any collection, and a very good introduction into Yoga in all its many facets.

Most of the translations in this book are from sources already found in English translation. Mallinson and Singleton however offer their own fresh, clear translations. Some of source material, even though other English translations exist, are either from obscure, hard-to-find, or out of print publications. Some of the translations appear to be from sources translated into English for the first time. All of the translations are expertly translated in clear modern English, yet faithful to key yogic concepts.

Yoga is an expansive topic not limited to the approach in Ashtanga Yoga. Nor is yoga limited to the yoga of Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. With this in mind, this collection of writings is grouped with reference to the yoga found in the Mahabharata, and in Buddhist, tantric, and Nath writings, traditions and samhitas. The approach of yoga is differ in each of these traditions; Mallinson and Singleton do a good job in showing the nuances between schools of yoga. The chapters follow the general approach taken in the Yoga Sutras, but also include chapters on bandha (yogic locks) and the yogic body.

The inclusion of writings by the Nath Siddhas are especially welcomed. The Naths were the spiritual ancestors to modern Hatha Yoga, a direct line leading to modern yoga as we now know it. The source material from this school of yoga is hard to find in English translation, let alone in any sort of publication.

The translators have supplied an introduction and glossary. The introduction contains an enlightening history of yoga. There are copious notes and a bibliography. This collection in other words contains something for any type of reader, whether this is your first time in studying yoga, a general reader, or a specialist. All in all, a highly recommended collection.

This is a major anthology and history that will bring the most cutting-edge research on yoga to a wide audience, along with new translations of some little-known yoga texts such as the Dattātreyayogaśāstra and the Amṛtasiddhi. It is especially useful for its charting the development of Haṭha Yogic practices (e.g., the conservation of bindu and kuṇḍalinī yoga) in the 10th-18th centuries. No doubt some readers will also find it controversial. Mallinson and Singleton show that some yoga techniques and texts are more recent than they have been presented by other scholars, such as Eliade and Feuerstein.
