About the Author
JOE S. MCILHANEY JR., M.D., is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist. In 2001, Dr. McIlhaney was appointed to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. He also serves on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. McIlhaney has co-authored over six books including Hooked: New Science on How Casual Sex is Affecting Our Children, and 1001 Health-Care Questions Women Ask. Dr. McIlhaney resides in Austin, Texas with his wife, Marion.

FREDA MCKISSIC BUSH, M.D., is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist and a partner in private practice with East Lakeland OB-GYN Associates in Jackson, Mississippi. She currently serves as Medical Director of the Center for Pregnancy Choices Metro Jackson and the Henry M. Johnson Women¿s Resource Crisis Pregnancy Center. Freda spends much of her time speaking on sexuality and social behavior education. Her passion is to help women ¿raise a standard¿ to become who they were created to be. To that end, she teaches and encourages a lifestyle of abstinence until marriage and fidelity within marriage. She co-authored her first book, Hooked, with Dr. Joe S. McIlhaney, in 2008.

It raised great questions for conversations and has helped me think more holistically about the physical, emotional and relational aspects of life.
However I wanted more case studies or at the least more explanation on the case studies that were notated. I like the book but I was left wanting a bit more depth.

Not worth the Price

This is the same exact book as the First edition; I bought both because my teacher insisted on the second edition and there was literally no difference so I completely wasted 100 bucks compared to the first edition which is less than 50.

Based on pure content alone though this is a great book.

Excellent Introductory Level Textbook

It is difficult to find a neuroscience textbook that is both informative and easy and fun to read. The editor for this textbook accomplishes this beautifully. My only complaint is that in paring down the size of the textbook from the first edition to the second edition, they sacrificed some details that I feel are still essential for understanding how neural pathways work. Overall, though, if you are looking for an introduction to the field without too many boring technical details, this textbook is perfect for you.

This is a well organized and updated book. However, it treats some time-honored findings as new, because neuroimaging studies have been made on them. To give a better sense of what is known about memory functions, it ought to be giving better linkages to cognitive psychology studies that had similar findings 20-40 years ago.

George A. Dunn is a Lecturer at the University of Indianapolis and the Ningbo Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University, China. A writer on pop culture and philosophy, Dunn is the editor of Veronica Mars and Philosophy (Wiley, 2014) and co-editor of Sons of Anarchy and Philosophy (Wiley, 2013), The Hunger Games and Philosophy (Wiley, 2012), and True Blood and Philosophy (Wiley, 2010).

William Irwin (series editor) is Professor of Philosophy at King’s College. He originated the philosophy and popular culture genre of books as co-editor of the bestselling The Simpsons and Philosophy and has overseen titles including House and Philosophy, Batman and Philosophy, and South Park and Philosophy.

This is an excellent book. It serves as a great way to introduce philosophy, generally, and environmental ethics in particular to students of philosophy and others interested in pursuing environmental issues.

Excellent!!!!

I loved everything about this book because it was so authoritative and made me think about the different messages of James Cameron's movie, Avatar. The many themes, while sometimes overlapping, also gave me a deeper appreciation of the scenes in the movie, showing me what I had missed or overlooked during every watching. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for something unique and thought-provoking which is related to a subject they may have liked, aka the movie Avatar. It's a rich and rewarding experience upon finishing an article before sitting back and reflecting on what you've just read. An excellent book for anyone looking to expand their horizons.

Amoral Corporations, treehuggers and private armies....... anyone heard this tale before?

Avatar is primarily an action-adventure and journey of self-discovery themed film based on speculative fiction. This then set against the background of expansionism, amoral corporation, there is an association with Blue bodied Hindu deities and deep ecology - which James Cameron spoke of in an interview. These themes will perhaps be of more interest to fans of the film and then those who study film. When looking towards the planet Pandora and the Nav’vi peoples we see echoes of philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau theory of the "Noble Savage”. In Rousseau’s key concept; that in a natural state man was compassionate and moral. That man could reach his highest state when he came together in small-related groups and learned love for the family, but before he became technically sophisticated.

The Na'vi peoples are seen in partnership, more akin to a symbiotic relationship, with their planet of Pandora for they are part of the rich tapestry of life and certainly not masters of the ecosystem. There is also symbolism here, in the form of the Native American experience at the hands of European explorers, in the form of adventurers and profiteers. A movie somewhat reminiscent of the film “Dances with Wolves”, where there are the good “invaders” from the East who appreciate the plains Indians; could they have been considered to have gone “Native”? Of course, others could be seen as evil and greed ridden.

This book contains an interesting narrative on topics such as the ecology depicted in the narrative, and themes of import. That said it could have benefited from diagrams and pictorials. However, a title that is still well worthy of a good four star rating.
