About the Author

Neeraj R Hatekar is Professor of Econometrics, Department of Economics, University of Mumbai. He is the Coordinator for the Centre for Computational Social Sciences, University of Mumbai. He has been the Smuts Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge and has taught courses on Indian economic development at the University. He is a prolific writer and has contributed to many peer-reviewed academic journals and the Economic and Political Weekly.

A must read for an introduction to Econometrics and R

This book is an excellent resource for anyone wanting a sound grip on the basic foundations of econometrics. Its lucid style is unique in that it applies the theory to practice, so that students can easily relate a concept to real examples. Also extremely beneficial is the use of R that is demonstrated in an easy fashion to accommodate even first time users of statistical packages. I'm glad I have it on my shelf.

A Classic!

This is one of the small handfull of books which I have kept for years (decades?) and read repeatedly. It hovers just below THE LORD OF THE RINGS on the scale of great sci-fi/fantasy. Nobody who has read this book on my recommendation has been anything less than 100% pleased. Including my Mom.

Though this is the first of a series, it stands well on its own -- perfection just as it is. A real classic which can be read by people who don't usually read or like sci-fi. Loan it to your own Mom after you are finished and you will see.

The "heroine" is a traveler through space and time named Morgaine. But the entire tale is from the point of view of Vanye, a youth from a primitive and superstitious warrior culture who regards Morgaine as a witch. He is forced by a sacred oath to serve her, even though he believes that serving a witch will cost him his soul -- a LITERAL "Damned-If-I-Do and Damned-If-I-Don't" situation.

The book is science fiction, but reads like sword and sorcery, because that is how Vanye sees the world. He is a wonderful character, probably one of the BEST CHARACTERS EVER CREATED, imho. Cherryh's gift for realisticly portraying the psychology of a superstitious, obsessive, highly traumatized, warrior-caste teenager is so spot-on it is almost creepy. Morgaine isn't too shabby either.

Give it a try. I tell people to read the first three pages of Chapter One. That is all it takes to get them hooked.

Oh, and don't be misled by the the cover art. This isn't remotely cheese-cakey. The heroine wears clothes and everything.

TENSION ... that makes you beg for more

This whole series, consisting of "Gate of Ivrel", "Well of Shiuan", "Fires of Azeroth", and "Exile's Gate", is my favorite of any author's, and I've read A LOT.

Cherryh's style is clean and dry, but at the same time very intense and passionate. Instead of using flowery words and melodrama to spoon-feed emotion to the reader, she uses common words and short, almost aggressive phrasing. The tension and passion and danger are drawn with a sharpness and clarity that is almost painful. A deceptively simple word or glance between these characters, whether friends or enemies, will at times bring that tension to a breathless peak, but without the expected release afterwards.

This is not an easy, exciting Harlequin-esque roller-coaster of peaks and valleys. This is a sharp ridge on a bare mountain with an occasional rock slide.

This is not a graceful Puccini aria that makes you want to weep and feel melancholy. This is avant-garde jazz where a single painfully high note is drawn out in the background for so long that you find yourself begging for a release that you fear may never come but then again do you really want it to?

It's exhausting, but in the best sense.

And about the 4th time I read the series, I found that it was funny too! It is, of course, a very dry humor, but it's there. And not a joke or eccentric comedic bit player to be seen.

It's easy to fall in love with these characters. They're very different from each other, but they're both excruciatingly familiar!

Cherryh creates the perfect male characters for a straight female audience. Cherryh's men are the kind many of us would create for ourselves. (Which is very different from the men male writers create.) Cherryh's men are capable of great valor and honor, but also of very deep emotion and affection, and self-reflection.

Also, her men often feel strong love and affection and respect for other men, without there being any sexual element to it. This is not only unique, but very difficult. The ability to create tension between male characters who love each other without it reading like sexual tension or a Sunday night "family drama" is something I rarely see. I appreciate it when I do.

My circle of friends has a shorthand way of expressing our reaction to this exhausting mix of physical danger and emotional tension, just by groaning "AAAAAHHHHGHHHHGHGHHHHHG!!!". If one of us starts off a conversation this way, another might say "Are you dying, or did you just finish a Cherryh?"

beginning of one of the finest SF series I've seen

_Gate_ is a great beginning to the Morgaine novels. Morgaine is an excellent heroine, breaking a lot of the lame stereotypes that lesser writers have fallen back on when it was too much effort to create a strong, unique female protagonist. If you appreciate a heroine who is all business and only fleetingly vulnerable, Morgaine is the genuine article. Vanye makes the perfect foil to her: fallible, afraid, loyal, and very human.
To give just one example of Cherryh's descriptive talents without spoiling the book, if you close your eyes and visualize when Morgaine draws her primary weapon, a shiver will probably go down your back. Rare indeed is the author who can scare you without resorting to grossness.
You could save time by ordering _Well of Shiuan_, _Fires of Azeroth_, and _Exile's Gate_ at the same time you order this one. If you order this one you are going to want the other three anyway.

Lane and Gregory take you down the rabbit-hole to peel back the layers covering up this political assassination. Quite an amazing read. I read it 20 years ago, but it still makes me angry.

Very Helpful

The GIS Tutorial Workbook for Arcview 9 is very helpful. You can learn at your own pace, granted it does take a while to learn (a few hours per section - including the exercises). Everything is layed out including side notes. I like how it says what to correct or how you can change back to the original settings, which makes this workbook a good future reference as well. The pages are not overcrowded, so you don't feel overwhelmed with information overload in one page. The material is spread out nicely and not too wordy. Compared to the online ERSI tutorials/modules, this book is really user-friendly, because the online ERSI tutorials/modules are very wordy and they give a lot of sale pitch language that I could do without. (It already takes a good deal of time to do the online tutorials; I don't need to be bogged down with rubbish introductions.) However, the GIS Tutorial Workbook gets right to the point, which I like. Thank you for such a comprehensive workbook! Yay!

Be careful buying this used, or even in a bookstore!

Be careful buying this used, or even in a bookstore! At my university bookstore this title is unwrapped and you can open the back cover and see the registration code that cannot be used twice, the code could easily be stolen by another student.

Buy it at Amazon(new only, not from 'other sellers') or directly from ESRI(as my Geography professor always recommends due to hearing stories about students not being able to use the software after someone stole the code). Best price at Amazon though. This title takes longer to get than many Amazon titles, so plan ahead by about a week and a half at least.

GIS workbook

Book arrived promptly and in mint condition. The description of the book could have been more detailed as other versions were also offered and it was difficult to tell whether I had the right version...but I did and the disks were all included as promised!

The treatment is founded on complex variable and vector methods, both of which are explained in the self-contained text. A wealth of problems, illustrations, and cross-references add to the book's value both as a text and a reference. The only prerequisite is a knowledge of the elements of the differential and integral calculus.

Good Basic Textbook

I am an aeronautical engineering graduate and have been working in the aviation industry for over 20 years after graduation. I have read this book and found it to be a good reference book.

This is a good basic textbook for those studying aerodynamics at undergraduate level. The author does a commendable job of clearly explaining the aerodynamic concepts which provide a good foundation on this subject for engineers.

Excellent introduction to inviscid airflow

Milne's book provides an excellent introduction to the study of inviscid airflow using potential theory. The text begins with 2D airfoil analysis via complex transformation techniques (conformal mapping). It then progresses to 3D finite wing theory using lifting line and lifting surface theory. It concludes with chapters on wind tunnel corrections, propellers, swept wings (sub and supersonic flow), and basic stability theory. A reference book dealing with conformal mapping and complex numbers may be helpful. For this I easily recommend another 5-star book, "Complex Variables and the Laplace Transform for Engineers" by Wilbur R. Lepage.

Aerodynamics Basics

I have just finished my review of Milne-Thomson's Theoretical Aerodynamics. I find the book good as a primer for the basic skills and knowledge an aeronautical engineer needs to build on.

While the field of aerodynamics move to specializations such as CFD, a good grounding in the basics is required to ensure CFD codes are furnishing the results wanted by the engineer. I encourage every aerodynamicist to purchase a copy of this book for his library and refer to it from time-to-time.

Upon leaving Shanghai Fairbairn accepted a job to train elite agents for the British Secret Service in anticipation of WWII.

About the Author
W.E. Fairbairn taught unarmed combat to the famed British Commandos and the U.S. armed forces during World War II. Before the war he served as assistant commissioner of the Shanghai Police Force. He was the inventor of the Fairbairn Commando Knife and the author of the classics Get Tough and Shooting to Live.

Douglas Fairbanks (1883 1939) was a very successful actor, director, screenwriter, and author. He is best known for his early social comedies and popular swashbucklers, such as The Mark of Zorro and The Iron Mask.

An Essential Addition to the Library of Any Martial Artist Serious about the Hand to Hand Combat Aspect!

Martial Arts have been around for at least 4,000 year. Many Styles, theories, Masters, and internationally recognized fighting sports surfaced on the earth. However, while the average Martial Art Master had a tendency to keep long term membership of his students and make the Martial Art a way of life involving a daily or weekly regimen of training to be fit and conditioned to battle, by doing so he did not support the students' need to learn self defense skills quickly. Generations perpetuating the objective of keeping long term membership and fear for competitive teaching business caused any accumulated knowledge of how to fight in self defense and prevail to be lost. Many so called Martial Arts Black Belts including the author of this book, had found it that their years of Martial Arts training did not help them to prevail in a serious street confrontation and got beaten, stabbed, cut, severely injured and some died. W.E Fairbairn was one of the Western Hand to Hand Combat Police and Military pioneers that documented and published his ideas in writing. As a former Krav Maga Chief Instructor in the Israeli Defense Force , I was aware that some of Fairbairn's ideas and training methods had influenced Imrich Lichtenfeld, the founder of Krav Maga who in fact helped to solve the missing links of the Science and Art of Hand to Hand Fighting Training Methods.

Scientific Self-Defence

Clear and easy to understand. Some of the techniques display a sense of "chivalry" and an intent to subdue an attacker with the least amount of injury to them. The principles are sound, however, they would need to drilled to be of good use to a practitioner.

Comments regarding the overall character of criminals is a bit outdated. The author implies that criminals are generally a cowardly lot and should they approach you with a weapon they would not be very likely to use it. While this may have been true about most criminals around the turn of the century, this is, obviously, not true today where a high percentage of street criminals commit armed robbery or muggings and still injure, kill, or rape their victim despite the victim's cooperation.

Overall, it is a good reference source for anyone who is interested in reality based self-defense and can be useful if applied with more decisive techniques and follow through to neutralize an attacker.

Scientific Self Defense

I liked this book. Written at a time when Shainghi, China was wilder than our wild west. Here it was early 1900's to 1930's, some of the motorcycle cops had sidecars with machine guns. Shootouts not that uncommon. Many police had bullet proof vests of the era. Kidnappings, robberies, burglaries were fairly standard. Taking criminals into custody was tricky, same as today. But a lot of good basic information, you can't really go wrong.
