About the Author
R.H. van Gulik, (1910-1967) studied Law and Oriental Languages at the Universities of Leiden and Utrecht, and in 1935 took his doctor's degree with honours on a thesis dealing with the horse cult in India, Tibet, and the Far East. Having entered the Netherlands Foreign Service in that same year, he held posts in Tokyo, Chunking (Nanking), Washington, New Delhi, Beirut, and Kuala Lumpur. His last posting was as Netherlands ambassador in Japan. Dr. van Gulik, who, after his thesis, continued to make valuable contributions to Sanskrit and Far Eastern studies, is also well-known as the author of the series of detective stories about Judge Dee. Paul R. Goldin is Associate Professor of Chinese Thought at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of "Rituals of the Way: The Philosophy of Xunzi" (Open Court, 1999), and "The Culture of Sex in Ancient China" (University of Hawai i Press, 2002). He is also a co-editor of the "Reader of Traditional Chinese Culture" (University of Hawai'i Press)."

No guilt

The ancient Chinese believed that human sexuality was analogous to 'cosmic' procreation. They saw absolutely no difference between rain wetting a field and semen fertilizing the womb of a woman, or between a damp soil ready for sowing seed and a moist vagina ready for penetration.

Their sexuality was never tainted by morality (guilt) and could never be a sin.

The ancient Chinese palette went from the most detailed biological pictures of copulation to the most spiritual experiences of love.

However, there were important differences between confucianism, taoism and tantrism.

The most conformist way of life was confucianism, which believed in biological immortality through offspring. Marriage was an important institution, but not an occasion for rejoicing. Music was prohibited for three days, because it was considered as a signal for the father that his son would soon take his place!

Taoists believed in physical immortality and tried to prolong life through different techniques: respiration (mastering the uterine respiration of the embryo), diets, gymnastics or heliotherapy imposing a harsh body regimen for its adepts.

A taoist 'alchemist' sect considered the woman's womb as a kind of chemist's cup capable of fabricating 'Life's Elixir' through copulation.

Certain sects organized mass copulations trying to put their followers in a mystical delirium and making them believe that they were invulnerable and invincible in combat. Powerful men used them in this sense for political goals.

Tantrism was a more difficult practice. Sexual intercourse had to take place when a woman was most fertile, but the man had to withhold ejaculation (coitus reservatus) in order to capture the yin of the woman and heighten his own vital powers.

Robert van Gulik (author of excellent 'Chinese' detective novels) treats this particularly difficult theme masterly.

He wrote a most stimulating book, not only for Chinese scholars.

A mariner of 30 years’ experience when his ship was taken, he had in place all the security precautions to keep his crew safe and hidden. This left him as the only possible hostage and led to an ordeal of several days in a lifeboat in the hands of pirates whom he portrays, with compassion and balance, as alternately conciliatory, vicious, and simply not all there. Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy assembled a task force large enough to fight a small war, and tension steadily rose, as did Phillips’ fear for his life. The pirate leader decamped, and the other three died in a classic hostage rescue by U.S. Navy SEALs. An amazing true story, exciting from cover to cover

I had the very great privilege to see Captain Richard Phillips speak in person at a university and I have to say, it was thrilling. His talk started out a tiny bit stilted and rehearsed and he seemed a tad nervous (kind of ironic that an audience would make him at all jittery after what he went through at sea), but as the talk went on, it got much more intense. For some reason he couched the talk in a sort of "business achievement" format (which I gather was probably suggested to him by his booking agency) and those parts were OK, but again, a bit stilted. But once he got back into the memories, once he began to relive his fears and his accomplishments (and failures) those five days at sea, the talk got very exciting.

I had bought this book before the talk but didn't get a chance to read it all the way through. But the next day I sat down and read the entire book and I'm so glad that I had it right there. I was able to use the book to relive parts of the talk and to better understand some of the fine points of his very brave adventure. When you see a movie of an event like this, you have to wonder how much is Hollywood and how much is reality, but after having seen him talk and having read this book, that movie is extremely close to portraying exactly what happened. In the Q&A after the talk, in fact, someone asked him that very question: How much of the movie was invented for drama? His reply was that while certain bits of the timelines were altered in small ways and certain events that happened weren't actually shown (in the movie and news stories there were only three shots fired, for example, but in reality many were fired), most of the movie was a very accurate reflection of actual events.

If that's the truth, and I believe it is, this is one very brave guy. In the face of near certain death, he put his ship's cargo and his crew ahead of his own life--and he figured out a way to outwit the pirates very early on. It was a gamble, but it saved everyone's lives.

I highly recommend both this book and the film. Books like this always have a ghost author involved because, let's face it, he's a sea captain not a writer, but it is his voice that comes through. And I really hope that the writing bug will get ahold of the Captain, because I'd love to hear more about the sea and about his life as a Merchant Marine.

If you get the chance to see Captain Phillips speak, do whatever you have to do to get there. In the meantime, what a great summer read this is--I can't wait to read it a second time. My only regret is that I didn't get an opportunity to ask him to sign my book! Next time.

Putting the lives of his crew before his

Moving story because the heroic story was real. Well told story without excessive distractions. It was an interesting way to open the story with a cliff hanger and then flash back to the events leading up to it and continuing on to conclusion. His torturous ordeal on the life boat went for for several chapters was hard to stomach because he described his hardship and sufferings so vividly. Our momentary discomforts reading them, however, cannot compare with Captain Philips' for every second in that hellish life boat must have stretched like eternity because he did not know if he could survive the ordeal. We have witnessed the faith of one family in God strengthened because the outcome was positive. That's only natural with most people who make pacts with God during crisis. But more remarkable is the person whose faith in God is unshaken despite being stricken with adversities upon adversities upon adversities a 1000 times worse than that of the Philips' family. There was one such remarkable man. His name was Job.

Great read

I loved this story and so enjoyed reading it. He truly is, as I suspected, genuine and down to earth, he could be your neighbor, your brother, or the guy that coaches the softball team in town. I think that is what has drawn most people to this story, it could have been any one of us. I hung on this story from the minute I heard about it and felt terrible he was in that situation and was absolutely OVER THE MOON when he was rescued. It was a victory for all of us and told the world that we still care about our citizens, enough to send the Navy Seals in to rescue one in trouble. I've been doubting who we are for a long time now, but this gave me heart.

The book itself is easy reading, it is such an interesting career choice and you learn so much about being a Maritime sailor. Add to that the touching relationship with his wife and children and of course the amazing rescue and wonderful job by the Navy Seals makes this a great read. I couldn't put it down, even though I knew the result! I love the part where he says we are all much stronger than we know. Very uplifting.

You did great, Captain Phillips, I'm proud you're one of us and that people like you still exist. Loved the "Irish" tribe thing, too!! Those Irish roots go deep and definitely give us strength when times are tough. Thank you for a wonderful read.

Frederick J. Murphy is Class of 1956 Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the College of the Holy Cross, where he was named Distinguished Teacher of the Year in 2001. He is the author of The Religious World of Jesus: An Introduction to Second Temple Palestinian Judaism (Nashville: Abingdon, 1991), which won the Alpha Sigma Nu Book Award in the Humanities in 1991 (Alpha Sigma Nu is the Honor Society of Jesuit Colleges and Universities).

Easy to read, great introduction, enjoyed the book!

The book was assigned in my class as part of the Institute for Leadership in Ministry for the Diocese of San Jose. It was a great book to go along with my New Testament class especially analyzing the gospels. The book also talks a bit about the gospels that didn't make it in and why. I highly recommend it.

Good book for the right reader

This book is easy to read and covers a wide range of project management topics, while still being only 200 pages long. On the back of the book it states that the book is "designed to meet the needs of the business manager or student" - and I would agree with that. This is a book for some-one who needs to know more about how project management is handled in medium to large organizations, but who isn't expecting to manage projects themselves.

A bit disappointing -2 1/2 stars

A disappointing outcome for a highly anticipated new book in this beloved series. I'm pretty sure that I own every book that Hannah Howell has ever written, and have really enjoyed this series in particular. This 7th book starts off with a "meet cute" moment; Bened Vaughn, our Hero, meets our heroine Primrose in the woods. She has a gun in her hands and repeatedly tells him to stop moving. He assumes she is afraid of him, but she really just doesn't want him to step on her spectacles. The H is big, dark and handsome; the h is tiny, blonde, and wears glasses - adorable! As usual, this author writes enjoyable characters and an interesting story line, but there were too many inconsistencies for me. *SPOILERISH* Having the h wear spectacles would have been a cute touch, but after their initial mention, they seemed to disappear. Primrose never takes them off, not while sleeping, not while making love; they don't even fall off when she is abducted! A missed opportunity right there- the lenses could at least have gotten all steamed up when Bened kissed her! It was also established early in the book that the h's brother didn't know that their father was dead - however, when the siblings find each other...nothing. No mention of poor, dead papa; no grief stricken reveal, just...* crickets*. I then had a real "wait, what?" moment near the end of the book. Primrose is being held captive in a church, about to be forced to marry a repugnant old man of her evil aunt's choosing ( this aunt is so villainous throughout the book, it borders on cartoonish ). Our intrepid heroine is at the altar, when the chapel door was thrown open, and Bened strode down the aisle. We later see the scene from Bened's point of view - He quietly slipped inside the church and crept down the aisle. WELL? Did he stride or did he creep? Hannah Howell has been an auto-buy for me for many years, and she will remain so. I really just wanted Bened's story to be better than this. I received this ARC from Netgalley for an honest review.

Wonderful Series - Love It

First of all - I love this series and Ms. Howell’s family of Wherelocke’s and Vaughn’s are so totally unique, creative and totally imaginative it’s hard to have to wait for the next books detailing this amazing family.

Right from the start we are introduced to Lady Primrose Wooten who is in a desperate search for her brother now that her beloved father had died under mysterious circumstances. If she cannot locate her brother in time, her odious aunt and uncle are attempting to marry her off to a very sleazy man who is rumored to have killed his last three wives. Having been unseated in the woods, she is in dire straits without her spectacles and horse. Thankfully, Sir Bened Vaughn who has a knack for calming and a sixth sense of danger has come to her aid and offers his services to Primrose.

Bened has been on his own for some time, usually hired to protect and keep safe the heirs of nobility. Having saved the life of his last client’s heir, Bened has been rewarded with a title and lands by a grateful father. On his way to inspect his new lands he runs into Primrose. Something about Primrose stirs something primal in his blood, and after hearing her story, he feels honor-bound to assist her in her search.

Filled with intrigue, danger, and a simmering sensuality Bened and Primrose’s adventures are fraught with all kinds of hazards as her vengeful and psychotically evil aunt is determined to rid herself of one more impediment blocking her way to riches and power. Naturally, the call goes out to Bened’s many relatives and with their assistance and advice, Bened and Primrose manage to keep up with the evil machinations of her killer aunt.

Bottom line: Excellent read - fast action - simmering sensuality - plus fabulous characters - what more does one need!

Exciting Read

This was an exciting read that is part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone book. The characters and storyline kept my interest because a gifted MS Howell knows how to tend to her craft.
You know that this author tantalizes the reader with lots of adventure, mystery and sexual tension. It makes one want to keep reading until the very end. The hero in this next tale of Wherlocke family, is Sir Bened Vaughn. He's handsome, gifted, dangerous and so hot it will make you think of naughty things. Bened did not grow up titled, but he's earned his way with the sweat of his brow. He's not so high in the instep, but he layed back and in control. So when Bened meets the lovely Lady Primrose Wooten on the same road as he (she's fallen off her horse) and looking for her glasses and offers his help. Primrose comes up with a pistol aimed at Bened to leave her alone and go on down the lane (so to speak). But being a noble man, he just can't seem to do that. Bened gets the story out of the lady, and says he will be her protection, and find her brother that is missing.
You will want to find out how both of stubborn people try to keep from falling in love, but fate is fickle, and tries to throw lots of fences in their way. Especially the nasty relatives of Primrose who are bad to the bone.

Good book on boolean algebra and logic for more advanced students

This book is devoted to two separate and related topics: the theory of Boolean algebra and logic and also the synthesis and simplification of switching and logic circuits. This is a good book for students taking a course on digital logic that has more of a computer science or mathematics perspective rather than an electrical engineering viewpoint. There is no mention of gates or digital circuit building blocks of any kind in this outline. The treatment of switching and logic circuits is limited to the combinational circuits - those circuits whose outputs depend only on the present inputs.

Chapter 1 goes over the basics of boolean logic and the notation used in this outline. Chapter 2 discusses sets and their operations and extends boolean logic to sets of objects. Chapter 3 discusses Boolean algebra, which is a set B together with two binary operations, a singular operation, the two specific elements 0 and 1, and a set of axioms. Thus, in this chapter we are led more into the realm of mathematics than circuits with a good number of proofs as exercises. Chapter 4 abruptly changes course and discusses switching and logic circuits. Here, previous discussions of Boolean logic lead to the practical tasks of minimization and the finding of all prime implicants of a set. The final chapter changes course once again and discusses some advanced topics in Boolean algebra such as lattices, rings, and m-completeness.

Although no specific previous knowledge is really explicitly required to understand this material, I would say that working through the material I found that experience with mathematical proofs, set theory, and oddly enough, abstract algebra were all very advantageous in understanding this outline. It is one of the better written Schaum's outline in that the theory is very well explained. I would recommend it for the more mathematically inclined who are interested in digital logic.

digital designers can find useful problems

For those of you inclined to the theoretical aspects of computing, this book may be good revision. The first half of the book deals with set theory and then with Boolean algebra. The Boolean concepts should be easy to follow, and likewise with the problems presented to you here.

What is more challenging is the second half, dealing with switching circuits. You can see techniques that map from a logic circuit to its Boolean representation. And then the vital idea of a Karnaugh map, in order to simplify that representation. Digital circuit designers live for this stuff! Many problems to chew on. See how well you really understand the material.

You might look with askance on the publication date of 1970. 1970?! Moore had barely formulated his law a few years earlier. And Medium Scale Integration was the order of the day, perhaps, with the first microprocessor still under design. But the maths in this book still holds true now. In fact, it is even more relevant today. Because the circuits are orders of magnitude larger, so finding efficient means of circuit minimisation are more urgent. For that, you need a solid theoretical basis. And this book can test that understanding.

Great compilation of puzzles. As you get to the center and back of the book, you really get challenged. Love the spiral binding. Makes it so much easier to do the puzzles when you're in a chair.

During the twelve years from 1933 until 1945, the concentration camp operated as a terror society. In this pioneering book, the renowned German sociologist Wolfgang Sofsky looks at the concentration camp from the inside as a laboratory of cruelty and a system of absolute power built on extreme violence, starvation, "terror labor," and the business-like extermination of human beings.

Based on historical documents and the reports of survivors, the book details how the resistance of prisoners was broken down. Arbitrary terror and routine violence destroyed personal identity and social solidarity, disrupted the very ideas of time and space, perverted human work into torture, and unleashed innumerable atrocities. As a result, daily life was reduced to a permanent struggle for survival, even as the meaning of self-preservation was extinguished. Sofsky takes us from the searing, unforgettable image of the Muselmann--Auschwitz jargon for the "walking dead"--to chronicles of epidemics, terror punishments, selections, and torture.

The society of the camp was dominated by the S.S. and a system of graduated and forced collaboration which turned selected victims into accomplices of terror. Sofsky shows that the S.S. was not a rigid bureaucracy, but a system with ample room for autonomy. The S.S. demanded individual initiative of its members. Consequently, although they were not required to torment or murder prisoners, officers and guards often exploited their freedom to do so--in passing or on a whim, with cause, or without.

The order of terror described by Sofsky culminated in the organized murder of millions of European Jews and Gypsies in the death-factories of Auschwitz and Treblinka. By the end of this book, Sofsky shows that the German concentration camp system cannot be seen as a temporary lapse into barbarism. Instead, it must be conceived as a product of modern civilization, where institutionalized, state-run human cruelty became possible with or without the mobilizing feelings of hatred.

The Nazi concentration camps illustrate the Dostoevskian doctrine that where there is no God, everything is permitted. While the camps had many rules, there were no laws, and certainly no justice. In this lucidly translated volume, award-winning German sociologist Sofsky sets out to analyze the organization of dominance in the camps and concludes that they were places of "absolute power; not a means to an end, but an end in itself." Indifferently ruled by the SS, which delegated responsibility for the day-to-day running to prisoner-functionaries, the lagers were divided into classes, with German political prisoners at the top, and Jews, Poles, and Russians at the bottom. Whether beaten, worked to death or left to die of disease, their lives were worthless, and their pain meaningful only in the pleasure it provided to the torturers. They were nothing, so nothing done to them mattered. Sofsky emphasizes that the murderers, ordinary people who were suffused with a spirit of "camaraderie" and a faith that they wouldn't be punished, did more than was required. "They did what they were permitted to?and they were permitted to do everything." Despite Sofsky's vast and painstaking research, his admirable and horrifying book leaves the reader convinced that the Holocaust is not a subject for sociologists but for theologians. This work, a prize winner when published in Germany in 1993, is derived from the author's postdoctoral thesis. In it Sofsky (sociology, Univ. of Gottingen) utilizes a wide range of both primary and secondary sources to analyze how concentration camps were used by Germany to maintain absolute power over its victims based on terror, organization, and excessive violence. He does not attempt to explain how or why the Holocaust happened and for the most part focuses on the concentration camps rather than the extermination centers. Rather, Sofsky patiently shows how virtually everything in the camps, from their physical layout to the use of time to the categorization of prisoners, was a way of exercising and consolidating absolute power over an increasingly dehumanized prisoner population. Sofsky analyzes the camps as a distinctive system of absolute power, based on terror, organization, and excessive violence. A Sociological Look at the Nazi Concentration Camps

Wolfgang Sofsky's book is not a work of history, but of sociology. The author is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Gottingen, and it shows. He has written a fascinating, very worthwhile look at how human existence in a concentration camp affects how we interact with one another socially. He has entire chapters devoted to space, time, social structures and work. He examines how each affects and is affected by the concentration camp. He looks at how space and time were used in Dachau, Sachsenhausen, etc. For example, the higher your place in the camp hierarchy, the more space you had, such as in your living quarters. Also, the higher your social status in the camp, the more free time you had. Those at the bottom, the Jews, had no free time. He examines the existence of social structures within the camp, ie there was the SS at the top; then the kapos, the prisoners who were put in charge of other prisoners; the block leaders, and the average prisoners beneath them. At the bottom, treated the most inhumanely, were the Jews and the so-called Musselmen, prisoners who were so weak and sick that they were apathetic, unaware and physically almost dead. He shows that work was used in the German concentration camps, not for much productive purpose, but to hasten the death of the prisoners.
One of the most important things in this book is Sofsky's look at selections. When people were brought to Auschwitz and other death camps, they were selected for either death or residence in the camp. Those most fit for work were registered and brought to live in the camp, everyone else was killed. He claims 25.9% of those transported to Auschwitz were admitted to the camp and the rest were killed. My only problem with Sofsky is that his source for that figure is other books and articles by the likes of D. Czech and Raul Hilberg. Sofsky fails to reference exact documents in that regard.

Dense but Riveting

This is a powerful book. It analyzes and explains the sociology of the Nazi concentration camp.

I would, however, recommend reading it After reading other books about the camps in general, and survivor testimony in particular.

It is not light reading, but, I found it gripping nonetheless.

If you do not understand why this was such a big deal, read this book.

Of everything I have read about the Concentration Camps, this is the first thing that really gave me a feel of total horror at how they operated and what it did to the people that experienced the camps in any role. I have never appreciated the concentration of evil nearly as well as I did reading this book. War has many horrors, but even the horrors of other wars pale before this measure of evil. If you have any thoughts that the internment of Americans in American internment camps was in any way comparable, read this and realize that there is no comparison. What we did was a national disgrace, but it was nowhere near this concentrated, distilled, carefully crafted evil. Well researched, and written by a German as a warning against complacency, lest time make memories of the horror fade.
